Well new toy, cigars on hold

Well my wife surprised me yet again with telling me I can save up for my new rifle WOOOOWHOOOOOO. I am saving for a .308 bolt action for 600-1000 yrd shooting. Of course I am saving for the whole nine yard package Rifle,optics,bi-pod,new stock so my cigar buying has to be on hold for a while.

So much for filling up my new empty humidor oh well expensive toys take time to get.

Well I just wanted to let you guys know because I am excited as hell about getting this rifle

Man I can't wait.

Shawn

I thought it was gonna be a cat-o-nine-tails with which to flagellate the Oompa. But I suppose shooting him is a bit better. Got a specific make in mind?

It's between 2.

A. Savage 10FP Tactical 308
B. Remington VLS 308

Both have heavy barrels.

Optics I am still up in the air with.

Re: Well new toy, cigars on hold

They quit making them, but i have been looking for a Tikka 595 but chambered in .223

If you find one while you are out and about shopping -- let me know Otherwise i'm going to have to break down and get one of those ugly ass AR 15's.

There's not many 1k yard ranges around. We only have one out here in Oregon and we have a LOT of space. Where are you shooting? I doubt you're plinking Loompa's in the Chocolate Factory at 1k -- not much of a challenge there and a waste of good ammo.

I have a VLS in .308 as my 1000yd rifle. Won a couple of 1kBR matches with it, pretty much out of the box, (factory class, of course).

So, you know where my vote's gonna go.

Learn reloading if you wanna go to 1000 with a .308. 'Nuff said.

i figured you show up in this thread with some smartash remark like that.

However, for the rapid fire strings, i have to admit, you are right about this platform. No way i could clear 10 rounds with a bolt action.

(oh and BTW Shawn, i'd rather have a new rifle than cigars any day -- good choice imho)

Re: Well new toy, cigars on hold

Thanks for the replies guys.

Roger go get the AR man you wont be disappointed you did. Man what fun they are. What AR are you looking at? I plan on setting up a M4gery once the 308 is completed.

Scott I do plan on reloading for this rifle so that wont be a problem. I am however still unsure on which rifle. Both are very accurate out of the box and both have a good reputation.

Anyone wanna chime in with optic opinions?????? I know I am looking for mildot and target turrets but other then that I wanna hear opinions.

Shawn

Re: Well new toy, cigars on hold

Whatever optics you decide on, make sure you'll have enough elevation to cover your range. You can cheat with your base, but it's better to not have to worry about it.

Leupolds are available everywhere and have a wide range of systems to choose from. I've got a U.S. Optics ST-10 on my .308... another excellent choice. Nightforce makes an awesome package. There are enough choices out there to make your life complicated. Choose whatever scope fits your needs and the options you're looking for... not what a bunch of internet yahoos tell you.

(Lapua cases extensively prepped, BR-2 primers, Sierra 175gr MKs and 44.4gr Varget. But I'm not suggesting a load or anything.)

I am looking at the RRA National Match AR2.

Optics: man, drop the glass and go metal ring sights. I'd never put glass on top of one my rifles, period.

However, whatever Scott"ican'tbelieveihavetobuythatuglyassAR15"M says is golden in my book. When it comes to target shooting he is, hands down, THE MAN.

I agree with you there. I hate using scopes and have much better luck when using open sights.

Go for the Savage 10FP Tactical 308. I own a 300 Savage Super Sport and it is the best rifle I've ever used.

Re: Well new toy, cigars on hold

I have the Savage 10FP Tactical 308 and son has a long action Savage 110 in .223. Great rifles. Both have Harris bipods. Both have factory stocks wich I think is the week spot on the Savage rifles. The are not stiff enough and can flex a little. Love the AccuTrigger. My rifle has it and the boys does not. Leupolds MK IV's on both.

I do like the Savage rifles a great deal.

Re: Well new toy, cigars on hold

Scott I have a few ideas on the optics but was just looking for suggestions. I like hearing everyones opinions. I am by no means new to firearms

Roger I am sorry bro but for 1000 yrd shooting I am putting glass on top this thing Nice choice on the AR bro I like the RRA ARs, well built in my opinion.

Scott I will try your recommended load for the 308, I am always looking for different ranges of ammo.

I do believe after a lot of research I am going with the Savage 10FP tactical. Stacey you are 100% correct about savages shitty stocks and that is why I plan on replacing it ASAP.

Scott one more question for you, out of curiousity what yardage do you have your .308 sighted at for 1000yrd comps???
