Disc Golf

Just moving some disc discussion over here from the 'what ya smokin in July' thread.

Just kind of getting it started if anyone's interested and will be back and make a posting or two later when I have more time.

I don't even know what it is. I'm guessing it is some variation on golf?

good idea on the thread over here. So what is the par on your local course and what do you shoot the par on the course that I play most is 56 and I get 60-70 70 on a real bad day 63 is my average.

its golf you play with disc's... specially designed frisby's.
There is a course literally in my back yard.. People who are bad always throw their discs in my yard and never bother to get them.. I guess they are scared of the 180lb dog that hangs out back there

It's as addicting a hobby as cigars, but in a different way. A good link to get an idea is http://www.pdga.com/information.php

Pretty much played like ball golf but with specially designed frisbee's. Ya got putters, ya got drivers, ya got mid-ranges and variations of all the above that fly straight, left or right. Object is to have the disc land in a target called a basket. Lots-o-fun!!! If you ever threw a frisbee on the beach you can play. If you never threw a frisbee on the beach you can play.

My home course (home course in this case being literally at my home) is a very technical par 56. We have quite a few tournies here, some statewide, some regional and see lots of mid-level pro's. The Ramcat, my course, course record is -7 and that was a smoking hot, unbvelievable round that included an ace. There are two other private courses in the county and one public. Both of the other private courses are par 56, the public 54. Right now I'll generally throw around +4 to par on these local courses. And they are all tough, tight, technical but fair wooded courses.

What course is in your back yard Aces? And I gotta tell ya, a 180 pound dog can have every disc I own if he demonstrates a serious desire to keep them.

Thats great riverdog to be able to have a course right in your back yard and it sounds like your pretty good. I just shoot a 59 today was a great game lots of nice drives and putts. I have a buddy that lives down in NC that I come down to see every once in a wile and would love to play a couple courses down there I hear pretty good things about them.

do you have to be a member of the pdga to be on their forum?

You have to be a member to talk, but anyone can monitor the discussion boards and course directory. Lots of good stuff on the discussion board... equipment, throwing techniques, etc. as well as local club notices from around the country.

Where is your NC friend? Good courses all over the state. Let me know next time you're down and we'll definitely get together.

Not sure if the private course thing is as big a deal elsewhere as it is in NC, but most of my favorite courses are private, word of mouth backyard deals. Not private in the sense that ball golf courses are, but somebody who plays has a little acreage and decides to put in a course. Most of these only require contact with the owner to be allowed to play. Some have minimal fee's, 3-5 bucks, but most are free. Great, great bunch of guys.

Hehe...someday, I'm gonna have to try this out. Seems to me it'd be cheaper than real golf and I like that.

Definitely cheaper and the learning curve from newbie to enjoyment is probably shorter in disc golf although the newbie to accomplished player is probably just as long. You can start playing with just a couple or three discs at $6-8 each. Premium discs are in the same molds as the cheaper discs but in a much more durable plastic and run $14-16 each. Once you've gravitated past the intro stage most folks carry 8-12 discs. Then again you have the obsessive/compulsive, uhhh.... like me, who carry16-20, or more.

And at public courses no tee times required. Same is true of most private courses as well. Very diverse bunch of folks too. My regular group includes meat cutters, electricians, IT guys (they're freaking everywhere ya know), shift workers, bankers, pharmacists, and lawyers. Can't seem to keep the lawyers out.

But.... be warned, it is highly addictive to certain personalities.

Raleigh/Durham is about two and a half hours. Some good courses over that way, but I haven't played them a lot. Charlotte is about an hour ten and has even better courses and more of them so I've always gravitated that way when playing out of town. According to what route you use, I-77 is within two miles of my house, there's another private course two miles from that, the public course in Yadkinville is ten miles and another private course two miles from that course, all of these courses being 18 holes.

Mini-herf, PA/NC challenge disc, kicked back fun casual play, whatever, abso-damn-lutely. Get a notion of when and let me know and we'll work it out. I'm on call every other weekend but we'll figure it out. Yup, yup, yup..........
