Drug Trials?
If you've ever thought about signing up for those high $$$ medical trials.... read this first.... Six men in hospital, 2 of them critical... I know it's rare, and it's why there's a big cash patment for signing up, but, ouch.

Re: Drug Trials?
"The Medical Research Council said that while it was "an unfortunate and extremely rare event", such clinical trials were essential for the development of new and better treatments."
Extremely rare? Six of six individuals who took the drug had bad reactions. Doesn't sound rare to me. The only two who didn't have a reaction took placebos. |

Re: Drug Trials?
This article fails to mention many things.
Was it the drug or a problem at the hospital? If it were a dosing error (ie they got more than the trial called for), that could happen with any drug and is a hospital error, not a clinical trial error. Were these healthy participants? Many clinical trials offer sick people their only option. I really don't know anything about this trial - so I won't make a comment either way about this in particular. But, new drugs have to start somewhere - there has to be a first time in humans trial. These are Phase I trials and generally start at very low doses based on animal models and gradually increase in dose until a bad reaction happens. Also, most of the time there is not big money given to people, it is a chance to live (think cancer patients where other treatments have failed). Just my 2 cents |

Re: Drug Trials?
OK, to clear up some things: This was a private medical trial, testing a new anti-imflammatory drug. All six were healthy, 'paid volunteers' as far as I'm aware. This happens quite alot over in the UK, £2000 for testing a drug for 2 weeks!
A friend of mine used to make a living doing this.... he made over £10k a year, for minimal time, and minimal hassle. Yes, low doses were given, and allegedly there were no problems with reactions in animal testing. As far as was it a problem with the drg, human error when administering or whatever, No one quite seems to know....
