What is the differance: USAF Reserves vs Air National Guard

The definition of the term “reserve” varies depending on the context. In one context, as used here in this article, it applies to all seven of the reserve components of the U.S. military. In another context, it applies to only the five reserve components directly associated with the five active duty military services but not to the Army National Guard nor the Air National Guard.

In most respects, the Army National Guard and Air National Guard are very similar to the Army Reserve and Air Force Reserve, respectively. The primary difference lies in the level of government to which they are subordinated. The Army Reserve and Air Force Reserve are subordinated to the federal government while the National Guards are subordinated to the various state governments, except when called into federal service by the President of the United States or as provided for by law. For example, the California Army National Guard and California Air National Guard are subordinated to the state of California and report to the governor of California as their commander-in-chief.

This unique relationship descends from the colonial and state militias that served as a balance against a standing federal army, which many Americans feared would threaten states’ rights. The militias were organized into the present National Guard system with the Militia Act of 1903.

Besides the theoretical check on federal power, the distinction between the federal military reserves and the National Guard permits state governors to use their personnel to assist in disaster relief and to preserve law and order in times of crisis. The latter is permitted because the National Guard are not subject to the restrictions of the Posse Comitatus Act unless they are under federal jurisdiction. The restrictions, however, do apply to the four of the other five reserve components just as it does with their active duty military counterparts. The United States Coast Guard and United States Coast Guard Reserve are not subject to the restrictions of the Posse Comitatus Act because they are the only Armed Force of the United States that is not part of the United States Department of Defense.

The active duty are full time military.

The reserves are federally backed only. They serve only federal missions and follow under the command of only the President.

The Guard are state and federal funded. They can serve state missions or federal missions. They must follow and obey orders of the Governor of their state as well as the President.

Basically the reserves and active duty follow the same rules as far as promotions and whatnot. The guard is a bit different. They use a different system.

If you served active duty you may be able to join the guard as long as you can reach you 20 years before age 55 i think.

So if you are 44 and served 9 years before you got out you can join the guard. Pretty sure thats how it works. Reserves would be a little harder joining, and I believe you would join with the rank you left.

the magic number is 40. So you take your age and subtact the years you were active duty (for me that is 6)..... so I am only 38 to the USAF.......

But seriously, congrats on your decision. One thing the National Guard has above it's active duty brethren is diversity, and I don't mean the racial bullshit. You have people from all different professions around you. When we pulled into some shithole in Iraq, I ended up doing all the wiring for our barracks. Nobody heard of KBR at the time, and the Army electricians were put to use in the more critical areas. Another guy was a carpenter and brought his circular saw. One was a computer geek and managed to get us wireless internet. One of the squad leaders owned his own construction company. Damn straight I took him everywhere I went (we were Engineers.) The active component was a bunch of shitbags as far as I could tell. While they would run their mouths, we would haul their shit back because they didn't know which end of a ****ing wrench to use. Part time soldiers are the shit!!

Sounds about accurate.. but I think its because of a few things.

1. Guard people spend their whole careers together for the most part. They arent send from unit to unit.

2. Guard people arent "real military" people. We understand how life really works outside the military.

3. We dont have to cut throat to get rank. We just patiently wait our turn.

I would have to say without a doubt that I would rather be in a war zone with my active duty brothers over the national guard for my MOS. Infantry isnt somthing you practice 2 times a month and are good at. That being said while hanging out on th FOB I love all the aforementioned things stated about the guard. You do get different people good at different things... but when it comes down to room clearing in Ramadi I would leave the guard guys in the FOB to fix the internet and trucks.

but if you want that radar running so you can get air support better hope there is a guard unit maintaining it.

when i went into qatar both radars were down and the idiots had no clue how to fix either.. or they just didnt care.
