In a nutshell my Jacksonville Mafia card expires this fall (short 6 yrs) and we'll likily need to transfer outta here. The best option I see in terms of locations for duty is San Diego.....

Question: Anyone spent some time there?

I'm interested in getting a basic idea of the cost of living, overall impressions' of the area (likes, dislikes), and how (if at all) it fares against say...Norfolk.

My only experience with the west coast is flying in/out of LAX. Beyond that...NADDA.

Would appreciate any insight you guys got to offer.

San Diego (or San Dog) is a beautiful city. The weather is abso****inglutely perfect year round. The only problem is that it is expensive, crowded, and expensive. I love to visit, but wouldn't live there (stationed is another story.) I was in Miramar before it was turned over to Uncle Sam's Misguided Children. I love being there.

I was never stationed there, but have many friends that have. Second what OSB said. However one thing needs to be pointed out when comparing to Norfolk.

SD has SMOKING hot women everywhere! Been there and seen them.

Norfolk was voted second fattest (obesity) city behind New Orleans when I was there.

Norfolk is well known to have a pretty high crime rate....as I have two babies this is obviously on my list of concerns....how does San Diego fall out for the average family?

I didn't know anyone that lived in Norfolk. Most people live in Va beach, Hampton roads, Chesapeake, etc.

Everywhere you go will have a seedy section and a wealthy section and everthing in between.

First apartment I had we were robbed, had nothing, no LR furniture and they stole our TV and the box it sat on.

Moved, literally, 5 miles away and was on a golf course 15th hole fairway.
