Those are all liberal positions. How many of them do you hold?

Let's agree to answer before we discuss and list the numbers to which you answered Yes. I scored 0 for 23. I contend that most people who call themselves liberals hold MANY non-liberal values, but that there has been a successful cultural indoctrination that has people thinking "if I do not say I am a liberal, I am bad".

I would hold that I am a classical liberal, the kind of liberal President John Adams would define as a liberal, not a post-60's radical who has stolen what was once a proud label. Find me ONE Democrat today who agrees with JFK's fervent anti-Communism. JFK ran to the right of Nixon in the 1960's on anti-Communism. Democrats USED to be militantly anti-totalitarian.

Feel free to check my posts and there are plenty of cigar posts, a majority. However, facts never stopped anyone who disagreed with me from lying about my motives.

Where is the "hate", Jeff? And since I moved the increasingly-politicized thread to the sandbox where it belongs, what's up with the RG ding? Given that the originating thread was about the Calabasas ban on outdoor smoking and that those who engage in such bans are nearly exclusively from one side of the political aisle, how can that news NOT be political?

By most people's definition I would, of course, be described as liberal. I don't think anyone is surprised by that. There are many many people on here whose political views are dramatically different than mine. For the most part, it is no problem whatsoever. The 'attack' was ad hominem not in the assail of the material (which is guilty of a classic logical fallacy as I hinted) - tha ad hominem attack is the part of the attack that was pointed at you. That is, if I am not mistaken, the definition of ad hominem. Now if I said that your post was incorrect because you posted it, and since you are a jerk it must therefore be wrong, that would be ad hominem in the sense of the logical fallacy. But since I said your post was wrong for reason X, and furthermore you are a jerk, that is not ad hominem.

let me spell it out:

Your post itself is problematic in that it describes the 'liberal' viewpoint in ways that only a conservative would describe them. This is a classic rhetorical technique, but contributes nothing to debate, consensus, or solution.

The ad-hominem part of my attack is this: you are continually and consistently using the board as a way of extending your own blog agenda. Many members post about politics here, but you post about little else, and there are always links to you silly little personal opinion page. It's the consistency, and the complete unrelated-to-the-board, and the way that these posts completely fail to contribute to a cigar community in any way that I am talking about. (now here's the ad hominem part) - you are a pompous idiot.

Some got bent out of shape by the correct observation that one side of the political spectrum is responsible for nearly all of the anti-herfing legislation out there.

I wasn't injecting my views about the UN, abortion, the mideast, the economyor whatever into that thread, but I think it is certainly worthy of discussion among herfers which politicians and trends are most stogie-friendly.

You have conservatives in all three branches of government and now the supreme court and they do nothing to make abortions illegal? What makes that a liberal v.s. conservative issue if conservatives have power and either don't care enough about the issue to act or they're chicken? I consider many of my opinions liberal. I am completely against abortion. But if I had political power I would do more than scratch my dick wrt abortions ...... which is all your conservatives have done.

i'm not going to stand up for Aaron here, because i feel this particular topic was bad form/just asking for trouble...

but he has been active in cigar related discussions all over the site. his topic about the "outdoor smoking ban" was about smoking, which should be in the "all cigar lounge", not over here. he raised his points about the state of California taking his right to smoke outdoors away... he used a "rush limbaugh" article to do it, which strikes a chord with those from the other political party...
HE was the one that stayed on topic the longest until people started flinging remarks at him about "gay marriage" (which had nothing to do with the subject of the outdoor smoking ban).
yes, he ended up crossing the line with his remark at post #20 about "liberals". to me, he was probably firing back at the ppl who were firing at him because they don't like his political stance.
then the link to THIS topic in that doesn't help either, but who were the attackers? it wasn't him in that topic, but he clearly tried to stir the pot here.

some people don't like his political stances, which do come out from time to time.... those are his opinions, he's entitled to them.
i don't see these as hate filled, no more than other peoples political posts, nor did i see anything that HE wrote as being racist (unless i missed it), he copies something (even provided the link) from another site.
bitching about non-cigar related posts in the "everything but" forum doesn't win you any points in the arguement against him either.

so, to me, as an outsider who didn't read either of those topics until this past 30 minutes... his topic about the outdoor smoking ban is cigar related, in the right spot. "HE" didn't post anything flaming any political party until provoked by comments from others who just don't like his stance.
when people replied directly to the topic at hand, they all agree that the outdoor smoking ban is total BS.
his posts were cigar related, although mixed with politics (but aren't smoking bans about both?)....

anyway, i have no dog in this, don't give a rip either way (other than this topic was an attempt to stir the poop with the ppl that have differing political views - which we could do without this type of poop stirring). just calling 'em like i see 'em. if anyone has issues with this, please PM me (after i clean 100 or so out of my inbox).
