However, I do wish the record could be broken by someone who was the type of man Hank was...

I don't think Hank will be there when he breaks the record.

I voted no.

My vote has nothing to do with BB's "alleged" use of steroids (OK, there's my attempt with being PC for the day). It has more to do with professional sports in general.

Let's look at the subject sport. players today (and taking "Juise" out of the equation) are much, MUCH better trained and conditioned this day and age than they were years and years ago, and that starts right from the Tyke leagues. The equipment is better than it was years ago. Yes, a baseball is a baseball is a baseball, but nobody can tell me there isn't better Quality Control now than 40 or more years ago, so hence the balls are better and more consistant. Same with the bats.

Back to training and conditioning. 40 years ago, how many 100 MPH fast balls did you see or hear of?? Nowadays, if you can't throw minimum 95+, you're in the minors dude. So, if said (better and more consistant) ball moving 15-20 MPH faster meets (better and more consistant) bat swung by a better conditioned player, what do you think happens??

To me, there is no comparison between the number BB will hit for his career and the number Hank hit.

I also believe the same thought process can be put on just about any professional sport, even golf, a sport I dearly love.

For the most part, professional athletes are a bunch of spoled rotten brats (rich ones no doubt, but still).

Sad really, I wouldn't even mind that much about the roids cause "everyone" was doing it... it's just the fact that the dude is about the biggest jackass in the history of sports. I hate the guy. I hate Sammy Sosa too, but only cause i think he is an idiot, not an ass. I'd rather see some other roid user like sammy break the record then barry any day. If the guy wasn't so arrogant, and well, just a complete ass, I woulnd't mind nearly as much. 'Cause like I said... "everyone was doing it"

there are arguments that can be made both ways. bigger parks, tighter balls, smaller strike zones, etc. but in about 6 years,if he stays on pace, we will be talking about a-rod. tonight he hit his 500th. to put this in perspective, at his age (32) he is at 500 and bonds was at 320! put the * by bonds name in the record books.

i think baseball was more "pure" then. Raw talent and a working mans money. Theres no constroversey back then about the science behind performance. Its the athletes. Now days all the possibilities make it easy to cheat. And unfortunately thats what happens.

Dont know i Barry cheated conclusively...would like to say he didnt...but I cant.

There is nothing 'pure' about professional sports anymore, least of all football and baseball. When I was growing up, pro ball players had to have businesses or work in the off season. They were a part of the community. When we started making millionaires of barely functional illiterates, it was all over. These guys now expect to have a 'career' in ten years. Who the hell has a career in ten years???
Personally, I voted yes, because no matter how 'big' he got, he still had to do what has been called the hardest thing in sports to do, hit a small round ball with a round bat. And do it a lot. If you don't like Bonds' attitude, which I don't that's fine. If you want to find a scapegoat for the steroid era, take aim at that clown of a commissioner. Baseball hasn't had an effective man at the top in a long, long, long time. Selig is the ultimate villain in this.

Scott, to echo your statement about what the players used to have to do, I heard an interview with Jack Youngblood the other day and he talked about that. He was one of the best defensive linemen to play the game, but in the offseason he worked at a bank! Amazing!

Down the block from where I grew up Ed Kranepool and Ron Swaboda of the '69 Miracle Mets lived and owned a restaurant called 'The Dugout'. Jerry Grote and Tom Seaver signed autographs at the local Great Eastern store.
Oh, for the good old days

It is a shame that someone who was such a natural talent had to resort to HGH/Steriods or whatever he took to continue his career. In my book the record still belongs to Aaron. That is until A-Rod or some enhancement free player breaks it.

Cheater...

Jose Canseco has another book out that is supposed to involve A-Rod somehow. We'll see how clean he is.
