In need of computer assistance-new desktop not working with new monitor

I know this should be a relatively easy fix, but I cannot get the new Dell desktop to load up while hooked up to my new 22" widescreen monitor. It will work with my 10 year old Gateway.

In the boot up process under my new monitor, it goes through the Dell screen, it goes to the Windows screen, and this shows a box saying "out of range". I previously attempted to boot in safe mode to change the display options with little success.

I'm just baffled at how to get the computer to work with the new monitor as the normal boot process doesn't work with it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Duane, the out of range comment means that the refresh rate set for the monitor and or the resolution is set (on the computer preferences) to a rate and resolution that the new monitor does not support.

Here is a Microsoft Knowledge base article on this and how to fix it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/286331

Should not take long to fix. Let us know how it goes.

Ceedee is correct - check the docs for the max resolution and refresh rate on your monitor, and do not exceed those when setting display properties.

Check if Dell has a driver for the display you are using, and while you're there check to make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card. I bought a new Vostro laptop about a month ago, and there were a lot of updated drivers and apps available. Machines only ship with the last image installed, which don't always have the latest and greatest bits on them.

Ket us know how it turns out - or it you need more ideas...

Already sent a PM to CeeDee, but I went into the BIOS as the video was set to auto and I switched it to onboard. The adapter information was showing up as unavailable, which wasn't allowing me to change any of the settings for the frequency or the size.

All is well now. Thanks for your help.

Interesting - I've never run into that one before. Stash that away for future reference. Glad to hear everything is cool now. Those large wide-screens are da bomb!

Duane ever get your monitor straight--I have a Gateway that the monitor just went out on me--looking to sell?
