****** troubles

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Recently, someone somehow gained unauthorized access to my ****** account and tried to purchase $2000 worth of stuff. I filed reports for the four purchases; 3 have been settled in my favor and the 4th is still under investigation.

The problem is, it looks like the $2000 have still been transferred from my bank account into my ****** account, and I don't have nearly that amount in my account, so I've been hit with huge overdraft fees along with having a negative balance. Does anyone have any experience with ****** and this sort of thing?

I have had a ****** account for over 8 years now. I have never had a problem. I wouldnt doubt that someone sent you an email with something like your account information needs to be updated and you replied thinking it was indeed ******, and thats how they gained access. Its a fairly common fraud practice now. Im hoping you get things settled!

Phishing and scam emails and sites are fairly easy to catch. Unless I was drunk or something I don't recall ever falling for anything like that.

My best guesses are:
1.) I signed up for an account at some site or something where the passwords weren't encrypted upon entry, and someone running the site or with access to the site's info got my info
2.) Someone was sniffing packets over the wireless connection on campus and happened to get my email account name and password and went from there into my ****** account

Considering the timing, I'm guessing it's more likely the second. I'm in the process of talking to my bank and ******, as well as gathering info on the guy who did it from the buyers he was communicating with.

Too late now, but NEVER attach PooPal to your front line account. I use a dummy that is well insulated from my household finances.

For these kind of accounts, make sure your password is different than any others. I would also say hook it up to a credit card instead. You have more protection.

Yeah, I'm normally a lot more careful about that kind of stuff, I guess I got comfortable with the fact that I'd never had any problems before. Bah. Learned an expensive lesson.
