What really stinks is they broke into my office building - busted through a wall no less - and of course everything was packed in the Pelican case, so all they had to do is pick it up and walk out with it. Total lose was close to $9K. That is some of the reason it took until last month to reach a point of settlement with insurance. They were choking pretty hard and the $2200cost of a Nikon film camera replacement, so I agreed to switch to make the complete switch to digital format, which saved them about $500. The new lenses are pretty sweet too!

Wow! In 2004, my car was broke into and they took the radio, my briefcase (w/ my billfold, credit cards, etc. inside), CD's, and a tool kit. They however left my black Canon camera bag which at the time had our Digital Rebel and two or three cheap kit quality lenses. All I can figure is that Canon logo on the bag was turned away and it maybe looked like a nylon lunch bag, so they left it. Or they ran out of time (since their hands were full anyway). Stupid theives, should have taken that one small bag instead of all the other crap. It was probably worth $1,200 - $1,500 (this is before we REALLY got into photography). Now we hardly ever use any of the "branded" camera bags. Don't know if it makes much of a difference, but no sense advertising to the crooks by putting a target on your back.

Sorry about getting off topic, Kass. But probably more good information to store in the back of your mind.

In all honesty I really wonder if they took time to look inside or if they simply saw it as an easy thing to grab and carry out. They were in here less than 4 minutes or so - from the time the alarm sounded to when the police showed up. I figured there was nothing like a plain old black case to deter them...guess I was wrong!!!

I have had a Canon 20D for three years and it is great. I agree with Boomer and spend your money on good glass. I couldn't afford the Canon L so settled with Sigma EX pro line and have been very happy. I have a 24-70 2.8 and a 50-500 along with some Canon primes.

Yeah, but you had it packaged up and ready to go! If they don't like what's inside, they dump it later. I actually got my booklet of CD's back, as they dumped a bunch of stuff in a dumpster a few blocks away and the business owners called. (There were about six cars in a parking garage all broken into at the same time.) Guess they didn't like my taste in music! Theives suck!

That's exactly it, Brian. The great thing is, if and when you're ready to upgrade, there's always someone else looking for some of the more affordable lenses you've got. So you don't really lose much money when upgrading lenses. For the most part, they hold their value. I think Troy and I need to find some more affordable hobbies! Cigars, photography, argh!

I use a Nikon D300 with a 18-200 vr, 80-300 also. I am getting rid of a Nikon d100 and 2 Nikon lenses - 28-80 and 80-300.
The reason I stay with Nikon, is because I have the lenses. It really depends on how much you want to spend. The Canon 40D is less than the Nikon D300, few less features, but takes great pics.

I currently have a Canon Rebel XTi and a Canon 40D.....both cameras are easy enough for a non-professionals to use but have all the ablilities a pro might want. Like everyone has already said....do your homework on the camera you think you might want, then make your purchase.

I'm good with my Sony 7.2 megapixel point and shoot cam! My wife has the D40 and its a great tool. So she says. I don't have the slightest clue on cameras so I would know.
