In NC we have the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry. It allows you to see the names, pictures (when available), and street address of convicted child molesters. You can put in your address, then expand a circle out from there of 1, 3 and 5 miles. Everyone should know where these predators live, especially parents. Protecting innocent children should be everyone's priority.

This is the Sex Offender website where you can lookup information for your state. Use it - often. How will you protect your children if you don't even know that two blocks away there is a predator? Know who lives in your area. Keep your children safe.

I hope everyone who reads this thread uses the link to learn who is living around them.

Now I'll climb down off my soapbox ..................

love these sites. in 25 years of corrections the one thing i could never get over is child molesters. i would rather deal with a mass murderer than a chester.

Yeah, we have one in Texas. Found one of my vendors on it. Actually went to high school with the guy.

Not to defend these people, they have created their own Hell, but have you considered that many, many MURDERS are sentenced to 10 years (or less) and are released on parole after serving 6 for another 4 years, yet a 16 year old boy fondles his 15 year old girl friend, her dad finds out and is outraged, charges are filed and the boy finds himself convicted (basically for being a teenager) and gets a life sentence? Somethings not right about that.

It was my understanding that if both parties were under 18, generally the sentence was extremely light. Do you have any specific cases or anything? That seems a little extreme...

There was a case here where some kids streaked across a stage during a play....at a high school I think. Well 1 of the kids (instead of just running naked from one end to the other) stopped mid stage, faced the crowd and did a couple of thrusts...Elvis style.

Well that little stunt made it "obscene" and he earned himself a sex offender status. The others weren't punished nearly as harsh.

I'm curious - are we talking about child molester registries or general sex offender ones? Personally, I wouldn't bother with registries for Child Molesters. Some clown who gets his jollies messing with kids can be handled a lot more simply with a length of rope and a nice sturdy tree.

Now for general sex offenders that do not involve kids, this is one I'm a little less clear on. I think it is up to the individual state to determine what a sex offense is, but if you are convicted of one in say Massachusetts, you would need to register in any state you move to. The challenge here is that I don't think the laws are consistent from state to state. Here in Massachusetts, I think they have three levels of Sex Offender status; One and Two are pretty serious ones - rape, assault, etc. But you can get tagged with level three status simply by being caught urinating in the woods (public lewdness).

Not sure if level three offenders need to register, but if they did, it would seem kind of odd for some poor schlub to carry the label of "sex offender" for the rest of his life simply because he got caught emptying his bladder one day after coming home from a late night frat party in college.
