It's really great to hear your perspectives on this feature.
I thought I would add this link back to a recent thread that explains a bit more about the system. How to: Report a Post, Give Trader Feedback, and Give Reputation Points (RG). |

Re: Ring Gauge Reputation System
Every board has their post whores, and resident big dogs. Until I learn who is who on a board, I just mostly pay attention to those with the relatively fewer posts for total membership time. Don't think a public rating system would be fair or helpful. You can figure it out on your own, over time.

Re: Ring Gauge Reputation System
I like the ring gauge system. I don't care about ultra-high RG gods, but it is useful for when you need to make people aware of negative issues, like trolling posts, or an obvious blatant mooch, or not paying in group buys (I have seen that happen.)

In my experience there seems to be no shortcuts to building a lasting and solid friendship.
![]() Nothing beats calling up someone's complete history of threads and posts and doing a little contextual reading. ![]() It is not long before a personality emerges, from there it is a matter of personal preference. Not too different from finding a favorite tobacco. |

Re: Ring Gauge Reputation System
I think the individual Awards from CigarLive are far far superior to anything else I've seen. It shows EXACTLY what a person has participated in including Bright Ideas, Passes and all the rest. And it does it in a manner that doesn't lend itself to FOGism either... Doing Awards here at Puff would be my vote, if I had one...

Re: Ring Gauge Reputation System
The ring gauge system has at times been reviled, ridiculed, and misused. Whether rg exists or not, there will be "post-whores, big dogs, and lurkers" (paraphrasing Phantom57).
Popularity (and unpopularity) are based on something - and rg IS a tangible measure of that something. That said, showing rg in threads is akin to people wear rg-embossed hats at a herf. Keep the system or don't ... but if we keep it, show the rg on member's page. |

Re: Ring Gauge Reputation System
Squid® would let you in a pass, but only if you payed me up-front a ten cigar retainer fee... HAW!! DOUBLE-HAW!!!!!!! No really, I think you're quite correct. Ring Gauge can be adjusted for any number of reasons, while the CigarLive Awards were far better, being just for the individual things they represented.

On a good forum like this, it's ok. On another forum I used to be on, It was nothing more than a poularity contest.

Would like to say this; RG used properly means you've had some great posts that are very informative and add something to the discussion. To participate in a trade/pass/etc, I won't use RG. Most others won't either; we'll be looking at your trader feedback to see HOW you've traded. These are two entirely different entities all together. Granted, some may asked for both, like +1 feedback and at least 10 (or usually just positive) RG, which you already have. Some may be a little higher, but it's rare when I see that. Just note, the most important thing is the Trader Feedback. Edit: would like to add that for spammers/etc, their RG does get knocked down pretty quick; so if you see someone running around here with -140RG, then I'm wondering what they said/did.

Re: Ring Gauge Reputation System
Obviously there are different thoughts about RG and it's importance. Anything can be abused,,even a system that looks as innocent as this. There are quite a few people who can manipulate anything they want to up to and including a cigar forum board. I read opinions from people who have asked what the primary goal of a cigar board was about in the first place and it was about comraderie and the chance to build relationships online with others. This is first and foremost what being a BOTL is all about,,forging good relationships thru a hobby we all enjoy. Will some take advantage of what goes on here? Absolutely they will and while they do that others will take advantage of "posting" more that others while some will use the RG system to knock others down a peg because they either don't like them or their opinions and sometimes that means their friends will attack en masse as well. It almost turns into a "high school" playground at times. For the most part, most on these sites are very good and honorable men.
To me, the I Trader is a good tool to use because it takes into account whether that person participated honorably in a split, buy, trade, etc. and it is a billboard that lets others know how this person acted. RG is subjective in that it can be built up by means other than true action. The intent is to use it as an honorable tool as others have said but we also know that this system can be manipulated to show something that may not be accurate. I do not go by RG at all but rather build a relationship first with another person and go from there. I trust others only when verified,,,to coin a phrase President Reagan used often. Trust is something that should be earned and not given away just because there is a number associated with their name but in this case, I Trader is something that can be verified while RG is something that is given out without really knowing who that person is,,,unless you have built that relationship. |
