Ring Gauge Reputation System

Has anyone seen how the the Ring Gauge Reputation system works over at Club Stogie? I have started to be active over there since we are going to merge and I am really liking the system. It actually encourages members not to make more post but better post. Other members can give you ring gauge and it is kinda neat. I am still learning the specifics but it really promotes the creation of great thought provoking threads.

I just noticed I gain some ring gauge over there from other members that liked my post. You can view your User CP to see who gave it to you. It has nothing to do with how long you have been on the board but how good your post are from what I can tell.

Thoughts anyone?

Here is a screenshot of my UserCP over there.

Didn't we try something like this with the reputation points thing a while back? As I recall it ended rather quickly.

It was tried on A woodworking forum I frequent and everyone had fits. It lasted about a week. I had a good score though. I personally don't mind it. I like someone to tell me if I'm getting outta line. It's a nice way to do so.

like mike said we did try that here and ended it prety quick. That said I like and dislike that system. The only real fault it has is a lot of the guys give ring gauge to the same guys all the time cause they are Gods over there and they get ring gauge for just an OK post that's why someguys have over 10,000 RG what is good is when you come across guys like mikeyfresh you could take away ring gauge and people will know he is not to me trusted. All in all though I like the system if it's used properly.

I agree with Jitzy. Over here we all know who is a good poster. All it takes is a little time to figure out who is blowing smoke or smoking a cigar.

I have had a lot of experience with a similar system on the Usual Suspects Network and it can work great. They have a couple limitations that are key in having it work - other than Admins/Mods, members can only give 1 or 2 points so totals don't go through the roof quickly and most important you can't give points to the same people all the time. You have to give points to a certain number of people before you can repeat a person - makes sure you spread points around. Also helps if members are willing to use it the way intended!

I believe we did try but I did not fully understand it when I set it up the first time. I was thinking on a whole other line of thinking when I set it up and took it down. Lets look into this because it may be something that works for CigarLive and eventually Puff.com.

When all the mods left over at Club Stogie a thread was starting asking the members what they would like to see change, or stay the same. I read about 6 or 7 pages and about 80% of the members wanted to do away with the Ring Gauge system. This was something that was added 2 or 3 years back. Most said they didn't like it because it was like a popularity contest. And the funny thing is the first guy to say get rid of it was a member that had been around from the start that has probably one of the highest R G. So my gut feeling would be no.

Daniel,

Please don't take this the wrong way! But I'm not interested in a popularity contest. I joined this community for one reason and one reason only. I was treated with respect from day one. I understand the whole rep points thing but it's crap. Your board was founded on community and mutual respect. Any way to artificially enhance that seems cheap. I have traded with, bought from, and sold to ALOT of BOTL'S here. MOST of what I have done goes unrecognized by the masses. But recognition is not the point. If those who know me know I am a good BOTL then that is all I need. I pay first, send mine first and don't ask for anything more from those who choose to do business with me. I am an honorable person and will always conduct myself in that way. I have no need for accolades.

These things are not said in light. I was one of the "Koolaid" drinkers who thrived on the positive props that this forum provided. Lately I have re-acessed my thoughts on such things. What do accolades provide? Nothing! The ITrader notes are a GOOD thing. It helps Noobs and others from being taken advantage of. Leave positive feedback whenever you can and let the others know this guy is OK. If not then send that too! I am proud of the reputation I have gained (weather it's shown publicly or not)and proud to be a member of this board. ITrader or something of the same is fine. Please do not cheapen it.

Thanks....................... Tommy

I agree with Frank...it's just a way to encourage the FOG system. the guys with ultra high RG's mostly get that way due to BS popularity contests...then the people who show up are intimidated by these guys who are supposed to be "gods" on the site only because they have this arbitrary number that means nothing (much like a post count)

zacks post is kinda right on but there really is a reason why every single message board uses post count it does sort of mean a lot now are there some guys that have only a few posts that are great members here? Absolutely but if someone only has around 300 posts and has been around since January it shows they may not post a lot but are reading the board often and KNOW what is going on are the guys that joined in January with over 1000 post sure and they too are big contributers to the board cause if they weren't the guys here would have figured them out long before they got there. Now without post counts we may just chalk up a stupid comment as "oh well he's just new and doesn't know any better" and that person would never be weeded out mikeyfresh was a good example of this.
