A Trillion is a lot of money
There has been a lot of talk about America's financial problems, including the national debt and deficit. We always hear the numbers expressed in "trillions" of dollars. Then I heard a guy on talk radio explain exactly how much a trillion is. Here's how he explained it.
How long (in years) is one trillion seconds? Anyone can Google this, but that would take the fun out of it. Without Googling the answer, post your guesses here (don't worry, your home calculator doesn't go that high). I'll post the answer later on. |

with a little rounding, and assuming 1yr = 365.25days to account for leap years, 1 trillion seconds (if my early morning math didn't fail me) is approx 31688.09yrs.

31709 years, 289 days, 1 hour, 46 minutes, 40 seconds (using standard 365 day years, no leap years),
but every 400 years has 97 leap days (multiples of 100 skip leap year unless it is also a multiple of 400), so the average year is 365+97/400 days (approximately 365.2425 days). 31688 years, 269 days, 13 hours, 19 minutes, 11 seconds (roughly).

Or to put it another way that really brings it in focus:

A stack of one trillion dollar bills would stand more than 55,000 miles high. That’s more than twice the distance around the earth’s equator.
A stack of one trillion dollar bills would weigh more than one million tons. That’s more than the combined, fully-loaded weight of all ten Nimitz-class aircraft carriers in the U.S. Navy. How big are ten Nimitz-class supercarriers? Tied end-to-end, they would be two miles long and have a combined flight deck area of 45 acres (about eight city blocks). It would take almost three decades to spend a trillion dollars at $1,000 per second, and if spending at this rate occurred only during business hours, more than 120 years would be required to dispense the sum.

Speaking of spending a trillion dollars, the recent bailout of mortgage lenders/insurers cost about $750,000,000,000 (3/4 of a trillion dollars, and it only took Congress 2 weeks to spend it at the rate of about $620,000 per second), or, about $2,500 per man, woman, and child (as they say) in the USA. Frankly, I could have used that money for my own family.
