Gasoline prices relate very well with cigars. Added costs for gas will cause us to pay more going to B&M's or delivery charges. That, added with the problems of layoffs, business closures, and a credit crunch may well negatively impact cigar sales. Cigar mfgs. may start closing their doors. Then, with less competition, cigars go up again. It's a vicious cycle. I think $4 gas stinks.
PS. Tom Brokaw is not an idiot. You don't to his position being an idiot. He's just wrong on his solution to an economic problem.

You have problems...
In Germany, Gas is 1.13€ for a liter. Thats 6.50$ a gallon. And that´s cheap, early this year, we were at 1.40€ a liter which cam to 10.05 $ a gallon. Because of the exchange rate... Most of that is taxes (like 60%). Including an "Ökosteuer" ecology tax. Point of the tax: to make driving more expensive an force producers to make better cars that use less gas... Kilian |

The problems we have do not have anything to do with tax policy. Under a free enterprise system, government would stay out of the way and let the consumer determine the kind of cars to be built. Unfortunately, the US is veering (no, swerving) away from the free enterprise system. It is government interference that has allowed American auto makers to continue building fuel inefficient cars, and it is government interference that will now destroy the American auto manufacturers.
I sure hope tax policy never dictates what cigars we can have. Oh, it already does - the Cuban embargo. Again, "Government is not the solution to our problems. Government IS the problem." - Ronald Reagan.
