Sad and Angering news from Gettysburg PA
I guess since I am a reenactor I may be a little more sensitive to this, but I heard from one of the other guys I reenact with that the Eternal Peace Light memorial was vandalized sometime today. The park service can't do much with it right now because it's too cold to use the chemicals necessary to try to clean it. There is a fear that it may be "unfixable."
The lack of respect in our society is disturbing. And, yes I know I'm beating a dead horse, but I get to see it on a daily basis in middle school with students whose parents don't discipline them nor do they teach them to respect adults. And they expect the teachers to raise the kids, but not discipline them. I know that this isn't the first time something has been vandalized, but really..... it's disgusting. Okay, so, yeah. If I type any more, this will turn into a sermon, and possibly go political or something. So, I'm going to stop while I'm ahead.

Here, here... spare the rod spoil the child, in my opinion. Within reason that is...

they'll get the little bastards who did it...I've been to that memorial numerous times
about 2 years ago some kids broke into my dads church (which was out in the middle of nowhere) and trashed the place, one of the kids was even so disrespectful enough to hang his ass over the balcony and drop a deuce in the middle of the sanctuary. What did the judge give them? community service... public flogging would have been a better choice.

I think that this is because no one feels that they are responsible for there own actions. This has been going on for generations now and it has compounded into major problems. It use to be it took a village to raise a child and now it is the village must raise the child without being able to disciplining it.

I must say that I'm not really one for history, but I really enjoyed the trip our history class took to the Gettysburg battlefields in high school. I've always wanted to go back, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. It's a shame that people can do things like this.
On the topic of "kids these days": Stories I hear from teachers in schools make me concerned for our future society. I think too many parents rely on the teachers to work miracles in the classroom and have given up on reinforcing the schoolwork at home. It's much easier to let a kid sit in front of a TV than to work with them on their reading and math. Then when the students get bad grades it's the teachers' fault, but I digress... I hope they find who did it. |

I feel your pain. I teach in high school, and a lot of kids have no respect for anything, themselves included.
Be patient. The pendulum will swing. In the meantime, relax and smoke a cigar.

I do agree that it's horrible what some people can do with apparently no remorse, but I think it's a bit of an over-reaction to condemn an entire generation of people for the actions of a portion of the group.
Every generation has their hooligans. Maybe there are a couple more in this generation than in the past or something, but there are a lot of good kids out there who would probably be offended by some of the terms used in this thread. Not trying to start an arguement here! I feel the same way sometimes reading the news these days! ![]() |

They ran an article in one of the local papers of a shooting that occured at a high school basketball game. A cop was 50 feet away when the kid pulled the gun. It's the 1980's mentality of rebelling against the educational system, but taken to a higher and more dangerous level. And 4 out of 5 parents that I conference with are convinced that their child could not possibly be at fault for everything. It's not damning a generation as much as it is facing the things that are happening and the apparent direction that things are going.
