but, there are three rules I was taught by my father. I have passed these three rules onto my son. They are: 1. Do not Steal; 2. Do not Lie; and 3. Always keep your Word.

Twenty of us formed a Fantasy Football League. The conditions were simple: Winner take all. A five-pack of cigars from each of the other 19 players.

Four weeks ago, I was the winner of that Fantasy League. Since that time I have been paid off by 8 of the other players. Three guys have told me they were sending their packs this week or next week because of personal circumstances. My thanks and appreciation go out to these gentlemen.

That means 8 guys have not paid their bet or even notified me of their intentions. I am sorry, but we all knew what we were risking. And it is not like a 5-er is asking someone to give up a their life.

A man should always keep his word. If I am out of line here, then so be it. If someone is offended... well, it is what it is. I have over 800 cigars in my collection. It is not like I will die if people do not pay me. This is a matter of principle though. You make a promise, you keep a promise. Very simple.

We all accepted this obligation. It is because of people not keeping their word that several members do not participate in passes anymore. Or grant wishes. Or do many of the other things that made this forum so great.

very reasonable post derek, i can understand why your bothered by it. it is much more about the principle of it than it is the cigars.

i have been waiting a little over 3 weeks for a pif from another forum i frequent, but the person has sent me emails at least twice a week keeping me updated. he's got a lot going on, and has had some personal problems lately. I dont care if it takes him a year to get it to me, i can tell that he truly wants to, but is just a victim of circumstance at the moment.

i really hope those 8 guys man up and send their bargain. if not, let me know, i'll send you a 5'er of my own to make up for it, and hopefully keep you interested in the forum a little more brother.

Thank you for the offer. I do appreciate it. Like I said, it is not about the cigars. I have lots of them. It is about a man keeping his word. Jitzy who sponsored the League went above and beyond and sent me extra cigars because he learned that guys were not paying up. I guess he felt obligated since he started the whole thing. He had no obligation to do that, and his action speaks volumes about the kind of guy he is. Incredible. To me it is a matter of principle... and honor.

Have you ever seen the movie "The Cinderella Man"? That is what I am talking about. In one scene Crowe (who plays the main character) goes to the unemployment bureau and pays back what he had received in benefits because he started boxing again and was no longer unemployed. That is character.

Your offer also shows character my friend. Just the fact you made the offer says a lot.

Absolutely. As long as the appropriate steps were taken to try to resolve the matter. It's truly unfortunate that things like this happen. People should think about what it means to be a BOTL.

You call to question the integrity of those that have paid or have promised to pay by not at least highlighting their good will and compliance.

Threads there for anyone to see but most wont go look at the Thanks posts for the ones who have anted up.

Other boards.... the winner copies the list like below and edits in a quick received/thanks/promised after they get their winnings. It's a nice reminder for the folks that have yet to pay, the vast majority of whom are usually just slow and forgetful.

Looks like most are still active here.. couple might need emails to remind them.

Dave--- I thanked those who paid up in the thread. I did not want to put up a list as you suggest because I did not want to call people out specifically. I did not want to do so until I at least gave people a chance to come forward before I put their names out in public. Your list idea is a good one, but I was trying to avoid embarassing anyone. Jitzy asked me if everyone was paying up and when I told him they were not he contacted some of them and put up a post asking people to pay up. He then put up far more cigars than his wager because he hosted the League. That was above and beyond what he needed to do.

Right now, I want to give everyone a chance to come forward on their own, so while your list posting is a good idea, I will let it go for now.

Perfectly understandable given where this is now. Sorry you had to go through this. My point on the list is more in the "suggestions for the future" as it helps solve the problem through process more often than not.

Wierd times with all the board conversions and folks wandering doesnt help.

That sucks man. I haven't participated in any sort of passing or receiving, but I know how it feels to check the mailbox for weeks and get nothing when you know damn well you have something coming.

Congrats though on winning. Don't really get football, but the way my boss yammers on about his own league, it sounds like a pretty decent feat to come out on top.
