Howdy Marco,
I haven'y met you yet, but I seriously doubt that you need a critter to make you manly.

Much more important things to consider are charectoristics such as;

Energy level of a dog. How much walking, running do you like to do?

Trainability. How much experience and time do you have to give the beastie?

Envirormental. Do you have small children? Cats? allergies?

Lots more things to consider but also chew on this, Dogs that are bred for show are usually lower energy than working dogs.

Also, it is very helpful to know the temperments and personalities of the parental dogs. This can also give us usefull insight as to a particular dogs tendencies. (barking, energy level etc)

Austrailian sheperds have the highest rating of inteligence, with the fewest structural weaknesses,
(ie german shepard hip displacia, Rotweilers vulnerable hearts)

but they also have a lot of energy and need a lot of exercise AND mental challenges everyday.

Here is a link to a dog breed quiz site to help us choose.

http://www.selectsmart.com/DOG/

Before you choose any dog I beg you to get familiar with the work of Ceasar Milan. He understands the way dogs think and interact and helps us to do it too. He is a heck of a good "Soul" and a great teacher.

Not that I need a dog to make me manly ... but I would like to have a dog that is my own that I can take with me in my car and call my own. Sure we have had other dogs in the past..my wifes maltese and another mutt that we brought over from hawaii. but its time for me to get a dog for myself that is good with my kids and that I can take with me to work and other places because I wouldnt be caught dead riding in my landcruiser with a maltese by myside,,hahaha

Re: manly Dog for a cigar smoker.

Jonesee said it all, I know it wasn't one of your choices but a Lab is the perfect family dog! And don't be worried, even if he/she is a family dog it will still be your dog as well. They are the easiest dog to train, will do anything to please it's owner. It seems thats whay they was born to do is please it's owner. Just awesome dogs! And you can take a Lab with you anywhere. I promise you that you will fall it love with it and wonder when you haven't had one your whole life.

Doesn't even have to be livestock as a matter of fact! Before he was trained, he jumped out of our Durango going almost 35 to chase a bird.

I got my guy as a pup of about 6 months, a family had given him up and I think he had been abused a bit because he is scared out of his wits of cords and will not grow out of it.

As a puppy, if you get them trained early on with the simple commands and the do's and dont's, you will have an extremely manageable little dingo. It took me about 3 months to get him to stop mouthing (that was the biggest problem) but he has now grown very protective when men come near or enter my home until they give him a treat.

These dogs are also not meant to be locked up in a home or in a small yard and need TONS of exercise - or you will have one trashed casa.

My dog learned the basic commands of sit, stay, leave it, come, lay down (and some trick commands dance, "Bang" {play dead}, up, bark) in about 1 week's time. With his daily walks he's as good as good can be, but if even 1 walk gets skipped my shoe collection takes the punishment.

He is absolutely amazing with kids as well. And women.

How about a Husky? They are a beautiful dog, very gentle with kids yet have a "manly" appearance like a wolf.I had one,she had one blue eye and one brown and loved that dog.And I believe they don't bark,I know ours never did.

Winston Churchill is often associated with English Bull Dogs.

I am considering the following:

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Rhodesian Ridge Back

Australian cattle dog

feel free to recommend any breed.
Given those choices my recommendation is for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier without question.

Re: manly Dog for a cigar smoker.

An Australian cattle dog is what I have now. His name is Jack and he is
the smartest dog I have ever had. Sooo easy to train.
I will from now on, have an Australian cattle dog at my house

I have had
A Great Dane "Josey"- heart breakers, do not live long
A Rottweiler "bo"- mine was a gentle giant, and smart, but pooped volcano's
A Lab - "Mary" just not for me
A West highland terrier - a poofy white thing,, sweet dog, but dumb as a box of rocks
An - English Bulldog "Gwen" Very fun dog, but high vet bills - female

do we have a post a picture of your pets thread? I thought I seen one a long time ago

Re: manly Dog for a cigar smoker.

The last time I tried to decide what dog breed to get I used the test below. I was surprised by the result, but reluctantly looked for the suggested breed and eventually got one. It is amazing how well it worked out.

Give this a try and let us know what you come up with.

Breed Selector, Dog Search, Puppy Survey, Puppy Test, Test to find the right dog, Breed Quiz
