For me the Cattle dog has too much energy, and the Rhodesian is just a not quite as friendly Lab, but from what I understand they are both great breeds. I actually own a dog that is somwhat similar to the cattle dog. It is a Blue Lacey. I have also owned Labs and Shepherds and some mutts. I happen to like the Bully breeds because I think they have great personality and an unwavering drive. However, for some people that is just a recipe for disaster. They can be hard headed and if not given the proper attention/training an unwavering drive can be a real pain in the ass. |

I swear by my pitbull. He's smart, obedient, knows when to be protective, great with people - especially kids, and quiet.

Re: manly Dog for a cigar smoker.
I second that. I have a pitbull and in general I think they require a little more responsibility and effort, but they are a great breed. When my pitbull was a pup I don't think she was as easy to train as a Lab or a Shepherd, but she is 9 now and is one of the best dogs I have ever owned.

Re: manly Dog for a cigar smoker.
I would go for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I had one once upon a time and it was one of the best dog's I've ever had. Gentle with kids, extremely loyal.
The only thing is, if it gets pissed of at another dog (which only happened once with mine, and that was after weeks of putting up with the other dog constantly biting her legs), when they bite another dog (normally it's neck) they don't let go. They attack to kill, if they attack at all, which really isn't very common despite common belief. Siberian Huskies are great dogs also. I've got a husky pup (about 4 months old) now. They are well known as one of the friendliest dog breeds around, which makes them poor guard dogs because they'll just lick intruders, but they are incredibly intelligent (sometimes too intelligent for their own good ) and are pretty damn manly if you ask me! They're great with kids too. The siberian natives that originally used these dogs would often use them as "baby sitter dogs" for their kids, along with pulling cargo and such.![]() (not my dog, just one I found on google )

Re: manly Dog for a cigar smoker.
I had pretty much nothing but Labs and Cockers growing up. Preffered the Labs since grooming was so much easier, but loved both breeds. Best dog we ever had was a Lab/Rottie mix. I was afraid when we had our first child it would be a problem, but she loved her so much and was so protective of her. She would go crazy when my mother would try to pick my daugher up. But the one thing that Ive seen in common with most any Lab we ever had was they all like to chew, so dont leave any shoes down!

Re: manly Dog for a cigar smoker.
Gol for the Rhodesian Ridge Back. AKA "Hog Dog". They are very smart and very protective. I would def get one as a puppy to have the ability to trian it well. If you train it for a family/gaurd dog any intruder will have the dog latched onto him any part available, in other words they won't let go unless thier master says so.
Or get a "blue healer/blue tick" they are basically farm/cow dogs that are a dime a dozen and Im sure you could find a farmer or hunter thatd GIVE you a puppy or five. I had a buddy who had quite a few. Those dogs were extremely loyal. He would park his truck under a shade tree, have the dogs in the bed with food n water, go to class at college, and they wouldnt budge; neither would anything in the truck. Fairly smart dogs too that can be trained to do complex to simple tasks and tricks. I have a Pit. Those aren't for everybody and can be extremely tempermental if raised wrong or bred wrong. Then we got a mutt, he is dumb as the stuff that comes out his butt.

Re: manly Dog for a cigar smoker.
I'd second getting a RESCUE dog. We have a Siberian who we rescued THIRTEEN years ago. Still very active and looks amazing considering he is 90+ years old. Siberians are not city dogs though. They like space and need to run. Very high energy dogs.
We also have a BIG 133 pound Malamute...also a rescue dog. He was from a Meth lab in a trailer on an Indiian Reservation here in MT. Starved, beaten the whole deal. Took him several days to calm down, figure out we wouldn't hurt him and that food would be there every day. But after a few weeks he became one of the most loyal and loving dogs we have ever had. He is DEVOTED to my wife. Walks with her everywhere, sleeps on the floor next to the bed, etc. I really DO think they KNOW that you saved them...and act accordingly. BULLDOGS.....My dad was a Marine and we had a couple of English Bulldogs when I was a kid. GREAT dogs, but a hot humid climate is tough on them. And....they are real FARTERS too! Amazing noises came from the male we had. Due to the deviated nasal passages, they swallow a lot of air. What goes IN...must eventually come OUT. FN in MT |

Re: manly Dog for a cigar smoker.
Beautiful Husky!
I had a Red Siberian, had to put her down Oct 08 after battling Cushions Syndrome for 6 years. She was a fighter, the best most loyal dog I ever owned. She was 13 when we put her down. Very manly dog! She was a beast. |
