Buy a goat!

No, really. Check your existing gas whacker, see if it has a ring on it for a shoulder harness.
I landscaped all through college, and that shoulder harness was a lifesaver.
If you go electric, you still have the weight of the cord to lug around and drag everywhere... utter waste of energy. Stick with gas.

Here's a link to an example of a more rugged version, but you get the idea:
Tanaka 746391 Shoulder Harness (TBC-600 Style) - 746391

You could also rig a harness easy, reusing padded straps off of laptop cases, etc.

I totally agree with the extension cord crap. I have a gas mower, weedeater and a blower but my edger is electric. I can't stand fighting with that damn cord.

Re: weedeater opinion

up date for everyone anxiously waiting to see what I bought
I got my poulan pro back from my brother in law and readjusted the shoulder strap and it wasnt too bad but then the trigger throttle broke and got it repaired for $50 bucks and it worked for a week and something else went wrong
said hell with any more money spent on that adn checked with woman who does some yard work for a living
she had a Red Max--found it at local store, expensive but I cleared out my hillside in two days (and its a big one) and didnt break my back doing it-- would recommend one for big jobs, just hope it keeps working like it did when I fired it up
