Re: lance needs a dog.....but what breed?

I have a Boston Terrier and a Jack Russel Terrier. They both wired for sound going 90 MPH all day long. The only trouble is they both want to sleep with my wife and Me. There is not enough room inthe bed for all of us at times. They demand attention and will get it one way or the other, but they are lovable dogs and I wounldn't get rid o for anything.

I have not read the replies but I gotta say I love Labs they are the best pups IMHO. I would go with them if you want a pure breed. If not go to the pound there are plenty of great and loving dogs there.

Re: lance needs a dog.....but what breed?

A few more observations...big dog shorter life, small dog longer life. A Mastiff sized dog lives about seven years...Lab sized about ten. Jack Russels, etc about 15 to 18 years. Just a generalization, I have seen a number of exceptions. I had an English Setter (great dog, about 45 to 50 lbs.) that lived to about 14 years. Had a Chihuahua/terrier mix that died mysteriously at 10 years...a huge loss.

Another thing, if you are to be the main pooper-scooper, small breeds are easier to pick up after!

I'm thinking a pug or a dachsund would do the trick.

Re: lance needs a dog.....but what breed?

we have two females, a brindle boxer and a lab/huskie mix. They are both about a year old and awesome dogs. We couldn't be happier, the boxer is extremly protective of my wife though, she follows her EVERYWHERE! Our lab/boxer mix is a sweet dog, but the boxer is just as sweet and a great guard dog. We will never be without a boxer again!

German Shepherd! I used to only have small sized breeds (Cocker Spaniel), but have loved my German Shepherd. He is very friendly, loyal, as a puppy did a regular mess, but he is very understood and obedient.

Thats because you were there!

These are the 2 in the lead though. I am leaning towards Dachshund because they dont snort all the time like pugs.

Dachshund. Definitely. Pugs just don't appeal to me. They look like they've been chasing too many parked cars. And they get those "gooey" eyeballs when they get old... yech. Just not my kinda dog.

BTW, who's the actor in your avatar, and what movie was that from?

Get a Weim and they will fight Jack the Ripper for you. Great dogs! But it goes to what you want a dog for. Get a mut and it won't have any of those annoying illnesses that come with pure breeds.

Re: lance needs a dog.....but what breed?

I love my little mutt that I have who was a rescue.. she's 11 and she still plays just as hard as a pup. As far as purebreds go, the BEST dog I ever had was a collie... seriously. Amazing dog.. was content to just sit with me all day, or go out in the woods and explore.. great dog, and they're beautiful too! And you can get them "rough" or "smooth".. shorthaired or longhaired.

There's two different bloodlines, too... one is the dished face, like the dog above, which I think looks better... there's also a roman nosed line, which to me just looks odd:

No idea, found it on an image search.

I like the collie look sort of, little big. I would much rather have a sheltie. 3rd on the list actually.

I had a sheltie growing up. Don't know if they're all like this, but ours was always antsy inside, wanted to be outside all the time. Then when he was outside he liked to "herd" cars. He basically was an outdoors/active sort of dog.

Re: lance needs a dog.....but what breed?

Shelties and collies are both pretty active dogs... shelties tend to be more so, because they were bred with terriers to get them smaller, and also give them that tenacity that is a terrier trademark... IE make them believe that they can feasibly tell this herd of 100 sheep where to go and what to do when they got there. Both are great breeds, though, and are good family dogs, because of their activity level.. If you get a sheltie or collie, check around your area to see if there's any flyball teams or agility groups nearby. Shelties and collies are like kids.. get them involved in a sport and they'll be better at home, because they'll have an outlet for their energy. flyball's hella fun to watch, too.. total rush. Shelties are naturals at it.. literally it's like they just watch the other dogs go, then do as they do.
