The best breed is Hienz 57 from the pound. We have had great dogs with a Aussie/German shepard mix and a Labrador/Beagle mix and a Norwegian Elk Hound/German Shepard mix. Good luck.

Re: lance needs a dog.....but what breed?
![]() Maremma Sheep dog The Maremma is a friendly and well-balanced flock guardian. Sober and dignified. This loyal, brave, and determined dog makes an excellent guard-dog without being a constant barker. It is correctly described as affectionate but not dependent. This breed is not a dog that will follow your every command submissively and certainly not if it cannot see the point to it. It is very intelligent and its education and training require mutual respect in handling and voice, and above all, consistency. It gets along with other dogs and pets and can be slightly reserved with strangers but not strongly so. People who are not welcome on your property will be stopped in their tracks. The Maremma is not as large as many of its fellow flock guards, but he still possesses comparable endurance and strength, as well as the ability to make up for the extra 50 pounds it lacks. It is alert and independent. A flock guard of impressive dominance and lifelong dedication, the breed takes control over its flock and human family. As a pet, they are not very attached or overly outgoing. Nevertheless, this rugged wolf-slayer breed has adapted into a marvelous companion, without loosing its extraordinary working abilities. It will defend both house and master, and it is particularly attentive with children. The Maremma is a marvelous sheepdog and loves its work. It is a terrible enemy of the wolf, but tame with man. Held in high esteem by shepherds, especially in the mountains where it thrives in the snow; resistant to both cold and brambles. For several decades, it also achieved success as a companion dog. This is due to the fact that English breeders have developed dogs of excellent character. |

Lab. Very friendly, very easily trained, and still make a good guard dog. No, they won't kill Jack the Ripper as he tears into your house, but they will do a damn good job of letting you know that something unusual is up.

Re: lance needs a dog.....but what breed?
Beagles are incredible. They are a small dog, but that is no measurement of the size of thier heart. I have had two that were like my kids. Incredible animals.
However there is something to be said for the pound. All those dogs with no-one to rub their head everyday

Do you live in an apartment or in a house?--in the city, 'burbs, or country?--yard or no? Do you have kids?--neighbours? Do you hunt?
Actually, I know nothing at all about dogs, but I'm only fourteen posts away from another bunch of bananas. Just ignore me. Lhasa Apso! ![]()

Re: lance needs a dog.....but what breed?
I've had all types of dogs. Grew up around pointers, beagles and labs. Some were house dogs others were pets and others were for hunting. Out of those the lab breed was the best family dog. The only thing that I didn't like was all the hair they would leave behind. Plus they have a pretty oily coat and you'll be able to smell them from time to time.
Now, we have a Giant Schnauzer as our house dog. Yes, it's a prett big dog but if your looking for something as loyal as a best friend, very alert and can be protective if trained that way these are great dogs. This breed's not for someone who is looking for a lap dog or has limited space but boy they are fun!!! We've got 3 kids, 2,4&10 and she is great with all of them. The best thing about the Schnauzer is they don't shed, all you have to do is brush them once or twice a week and you'll never find a single hair around the house or on your cloths. Just my ![]() |

Re: lance needs a dog.....but what breed?
My wife and I have four dogs. Two Pomeranians, a sort of wire-haired lowrider type, and a Chihuahua. They are all rescue dogs from various pounds and rescue groups. All great dogs. There are lot's of good dogs that people dump or are taken away for various reasons. I would recommend you decide on a size first, then start eliminating breeds ( too active, too noisy, too excitable, etc.) until you narrow it down to where he or she will spend most of it's time. Indoor dog, outdoor, sleep in the kid's room, live in a kennel, and such.
Beagels are cool dogs but they are a hound and that means they bay when they get excited. If you live in an apartment that could be a problem. Hunting breeds such as Labs, Beagles, Retrievers, etc. need a good amount of excercise too. What ever you decide, don't get one and chain it up in the back yard. I have seen some pretty good dogs get messed up from that situation. ![]()

Re: lance needs a dog.....but what breed?
I grew up in a house where we had one pure-breed after another, the best dog i have ever had however is the one my wife and i got when we got married. We went to the pound and picked out a pure mutt! We know she has rottie in her because of the markings, but the rest of her is pure speculation, not even the vet has any good guess. Mutts seem to have the best temperment, and not to mention there seems to be a loyalty that comes with rescuing them from the pound, its like they always remember that! Plus you dont get the problems that puros get from limitted breading pools.
We have a pure Rottie too, and he is great, but i would take the mutt anyday. LT ![]()
