Help us pick our vacation destinata ion

Hello fellow puffers, I need some help.

I will try to keep this as short as possible. Here it goes

The wife and I want to take the family on vacation the first week of october. It is us and two kids. A boy that is 5, and a girl that is 6. The few things we know are we want to see the ocean because none of us have before, and we want to stay in a condo or beach house. (no hotels)

That is all the things we know. I want to be somewhere that we can get out and do things. Doesn't have to be a big city but I don't wanna be in BFE either. She wants the exact opposite. She wants to be somewhere that is totally quite, and quaint. So we need help finding somewhere in the middle of what we want.

The only requirement is it has to be within 10-12 hours of southern Ky. So southern Florida would be out of the question. nd it has to be by the ocean. Maybe a little town off the beaten path. We plan on stayin 4-7 days. everything else is up for grabs.

Any help is apprecciated.

Try the Myrtle Beach area. Pawleys Island is very nice and quaint. It is also close enough to Myrtle Beach proper (12 - 15 miles) that you can do the touristy things. Should be no problem finding a condo or beach house that time of year.

Hey T.W.,

How bout Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, AL.??? I'm going there this Saturday.

It's fairly nice down there, & relativlely inexpensive as far as beach destinations go. Pretty low key & more family oriented as well. Good food & golf, some decent shopping for the lady too. I'd say it's about approx 8-9 hours from Kentucky.

Might wanna check it out...

Re: Help us pick our vacation destinata ion

Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks North Carolina

think both would meet your 10-12 hour requirement
outer banks is definitely quiet and refreshing but has shops

Do it T.W., do it.

This is right up my alley. Well, was....we're about to have a baby, but before babyreindeer, mrsreindeer & I loved to travel.

So, if you're sticking within 10 - 12 hours...wait, are you driving or flying?

If you're flying...

I'm not biased or anything but I'd say Southern California in October could be nice and warm and it's beautiful here! I love the Redondo Beach / Hermosa Beach areas and Newport Beach / Laguna Beach are really great too. They still give you a pretty good small-town feeling even though you're in or around L.A.

Out of those, I'd choose Redondo Beach or Newport Beach. Really, October is a nice time to visit.

Hawaii is also great. I love Kauai and mrsreindeer prefers Maui. Both are great and you won't be disappointed. If you want more details, let me know.

I know Martha's Vineyard is great up in Massachusetts, Cape Cod....although I haven't been since I was a kid and October might be getting chilly, I don't know.

As for Caribbean & Latin America...St. Lucia is beautiful, Grand Cayman and Aruba are very Western with great sandy beaches if you're looking for something a little more like home.

St. John is awesome...we stayed at a joint called Caneel Bay which used to be owned by the Rockefellers and the resort has SEVEN beaches....one for each day we were there. And so close to many other islands so you can boat on over and explore the US Virgin Islands as well as the British. Not sure how weather is in October here but it 'should' be ok since it's relatively close to the equator.

I can't say enough great things about Belize. Seriously, everyone should go to Belize. We went last year and absolutely loved it. Again, I can give you details if you want.

WOW, you guys are all over this. All of these are great suggestions. Though we will probably have to stick with driving to save some costs. Pawleys Island looks pretty tempting. The wife and I are still discussing options. I am really excited about going, and want to find the perfect spot.
Keep em comin guys, I'm looking at everything you suggest.

Re: Help us pick our vacation destinata ion

My golf buddies and I go to Hilton head Island, SC. If you're not a golfer there is plenty of other things to do. I know of 2 good cigar shops there. There is beach, bike trails, within a couple hours drive to Charleston and within an hour to Savannah. Great food. It's 18 hours from Toronto so it would be within your range. But if he goes to any of these other spots I won't be able to corrupt him with cigars and booze!
