As I said, I have some experience in this situation and in reality, once you've killed someone, it's not something you get over, so be very sure you really want to fire that gun at someone, carrying one is a bit different then using one, it's more a security comfort for most people, because it's quite rare for someone to actually have to ever use it in the first place.

However, also understand that in self defense, if you can give the money over and aren't fearing for your life and have no reason they'll kill you instead then if you shoot them it may lie on your hands, due to the fact you had other options, but if you give the money and THEY leave, and then you shoot them, that's not self defenses, that's aggravated assault, and it is illegal, so be very careful in what you do.

Make certain to the study the law for where you live regarding guns and self defense.

If they have a gun, are still that close to me, and can see me, I'm still in fear for my life! Don't know about the rest of you, but thats just me.

As far as taking another's life. If its between me and them, my family and them, my friends and them, etc.. well you get the point. Not trying to act or sound like a bada$$ or anything like that but I have been in those shoes and I'm glad I did what I did and I'm here to type in this thread.

If Shervin had a gun at the time of the robbery he would have been shot more than likely...or even more likely, his gun would have been in his car and then it would have been another gun on the street in the hand of a criminal...there are two sides to this argument and I see both...He did the best thing he could...comply with the thieves and let them have what they want...after it is all over you can try to get your stuff back through the police...He lived and that is ALL that matters...

well said smokin. I partially agree the key thing here is he did not get hurt. We all hope this never happens and Shervin hopes there is never a next time. But when next time comes for him or others, situational awareness is the key. With or without a weapon situational awareness is the most important thing. Self defence is a reaction not an action. You have to see it coming to react. Like the old saying, the one that kills you you never see or hear.

Your right awareness IS the key and under the circumstances if I had had a gun a reaction probably wouldn't have helped me much as I have no formal training in how to use one.

However NOW that I know this (experience is one hell of a teacher) I have decided to move forward in getting a concealed permit and a firearm. I know there are responsibilities with owning, maintaining, carrying, firing and storing your weapon and I plan on becoming proficient in them all.

A good friend asked me this week: Whats the best gun to have in the event of a dangerous situation? The answer is the one you have as opposed to the one you wished you had!
