I was watching the news tonight and heard about this story and thought it was a joke and then did some research on it. Seems this story was back in May of this year. I am watching in disbelief of the social dismantling of our system. In order to fund health care they want to tax things they deem bad for us. We all know of the tobacco taxes but here we are on going down the slope with sodas and God knows what is going to be next. I use to say what else is next and now I am seeing it up close and personal. Seems when they say they aren't going to raise our personal income tax they never mentioned that they were going to tax everything else a la carte. Can they tax air? You know if they can they will. This is so disgusting what they are doing and they are shoving it down our throats. Back to the batcave.

As soon as I saw this on TV the other night I recall a thread earlier this year where people were discussing the cigar taxes to fund CHIP and wondering to myself...what is next.

My wife says next thing you know they will tax people on their BMI rather than their income.

Slippery slope. They take control of health care, and then they take control of our "bad" habits. Who are these people to decide that soda can be taxed because it is "bad" for you? Next thing they will tax (or ban) hamburgers, from their misguided fraud that hamburgers are bad for you. Next thing you know they will tax seafood because fishing is "bad" for the fishies.

Why do we allow these corrupt bureaucrats to do stuff like this?

Because largely, most American's are blissfully unaware of the dismantling of our personal rights and liberties. There are so few people who care about what these bastards are doing to our country and if you even try to tell them or enlighten them you are cast out as a crazy and or misguided fool. Most people in my generation do not care or know about political happenings or the general state of our rights and how they are being taken away from us. It's true what they say, if you can keep the majority ignorant,fat, and mostly happy no one will listen to the minority who speak truth and see the evil that corrupts our country.

If our forefathers could see how little so many of us fight against tyranny they would be disgusted and disappointed to see that their brave fight for liberty and freedom has largely gone in vain.

How about we just levy a tax on stupid ideas coming out of DC these days, we could probably pay off the debt of most industrialized nations inside of an hour or so...

I can actually understand where the gov't is coming from on this issue. Let's face it: America is a country of conspicuous consumption. I am guilty of eating enough at a buffet in one night to feed a family in a 3rd world country for weeks.

Because of this, people have heart-attacks, become obese, and develop diabetes. Many of these people do not have health insurance. It is against the law to refuse anyone medical attention. Who pays for the thousands of emergency bi-pass surgeries for uninsured victims of obesity? We do. In order to lessen the expenses of medical insurance for everybody, the government is trying to decrease risks so that the price comes down.

It just sucks that apparently it's being done with our beloved soda.

What would be a REALLY NEAT IDEA would be to pull our TROOPS out of the MIDDLE EAST, so that we don't keep spending billions on a "war". I'd rather drink soda than pay tax dollars for bullets being fired at civilians and medical bills caused by international ghetto-superstars.

This thread will go on forever if this happens. All you have to do is switch "soda" for something like "juice tax weighed" or "beer tax weighed", etc, etc. This will lead to anything and everything with sugar that can be tied to obesity. When does it stop?!? We'll eventually be eating wheat and drinking water just to cut down on spending. It's amazing how we had to do it but the government doesn't.....
Does be misled by just thinking soda tax. This is a "sugar" tax and these hippies in the government are just getting started.
