The worst part of October!

This is more of a rant then anything but it drives me nuts. Every year during the month of October, radio disc jockeys say Rocktober. When did this start and why does it continue? Every rock station does it, it's not cleaver or hip anymore. Please stop the madness. Sorry, I'm done now, man I feel better. Happy Rocktober!!!! Yuck!

I think Rocktober has been out since the early 90's..not sure why they still say it..other than that, I love October..carving up some pumkins tonight with my 6 year old twin girls...we were at store getting pumpkins just for the occasion...can't wait..tradition of ours we have on the 1st of Oct..

Most years we have snow for Halloween, so yeah, Snowsuit costumes are "In"

Back in the day, several hundred years ago, I was born in the state of Maine. October was called the birthday month then. Winters in Maine were long and cold, the sun went down early and there was little to do so people went to bed early. If you count back 9 months from October you'll see when the real rocking took place. October was when you paid the piper.

Unfortunately it started before the 90s, on an old new york rock station, wnew fm. It started out in the 60s as a free format(the d.j. or host, would play whatever he wanted to, and do whatever he wanted to)
By the time the late seventies or early eighties came around it went from free format, to programmed music like every other station, and they felt a need to be ultra hip. They had this promotion going all through october(when all the college kids were back in town), and called the month rocktober. It sound so juvenile.
Same thing that all the stations use now, such as get the led out(led zeppelin) and two for tuesdays.
Thank goodness for my lp collection. For you youngsters we used to call them records. Vinyl.
Now let me regress with one of my stories.
Back in the days of my first war(Viet Nam) we used to buy (and I dont condon any of this), opium that was pressed into looking like vinyl records and put into legitamate record covers. (Beatles, CCR, and others)
It would cost us 3 dollars each. I was so naive, I didnt even know what opium was, even though we were supplied with morphine. I thought it was chocolate or something from france.
So I sent them to my moms house(about 20 of them), and I had forgottem about them, till I got home one day, and tried to play one on the turntable and realized what it was.
I asked some old high school friends of mine, and they were so excited. They said the in thing was to take marijuana and spray it with opium, to "chase the dragon".
They were offering me a lot of money(for those days) to buy them.
I wound up throwing them into the ocean. I did with a military buddy of mine, keep one and crack it into a pipe and tried it out. Very intimidating drug. But just gave me heavy dreams filled with nightmares.
I guess it was too close to my war experiences.
Just something I remembered as I was typing about Rocktober.

Its amazing on how a certain topic, will jog a persons deep recessd memories. I havent thought about this event in probably 20 years. On second thought, whenver I hear that Steely Dan song, where the lyric goes something like "tonight well chase the dragon" I always get a chuckle. But its just a quick thought, unlike now.
