Thanks for the info David, and Kerri. If the scammers put as much effort onto working at a 'real' job, they would have no money issues.

She called the bank screaming and the immediately reversed the charges and canceled all her cards. So how did somebody get her card number and the 3 digit code on the back? Im guessing it was somebody at a bar or little convienience store.
This is an age old scam. Note that most "debit" cards have a $500 liability (as opposed to $50 or even $0 on most Master/Visa CREDIT cards). Banks also allow "overdraft" with debit cards since they can soak you for fees (recent legislation supposedly nixes that).

Anyhoos - the scam is a simple cell phone (camera). As the clerk goes to swipe your card, he/she/it fumbles, card goes below your vision, click turn over click. Obviously if you are swiping it and keying in a PIN, thats not going to work. Then someone skimmed the transaction portal and jacked a whole bunch of debit/PINs.

Never let the card leave your sight. Be rude and insist you follow the clerk/waiter to the swipe thingie. Or ask the manager to swipe it.
