A nyc police officer or firefighter are not allowed to live in New Jersey. So we have to live in nyc, long island and some of the outer counties.
Thats why most nyc firefighter and law enforcement have to commute 3 hours a day, to one of the outer counties, where you can still afford a house, or practically live out in montauk on the island.
I feel sorry for the young officers.
New Jersey is a great place to raise a family, and I believe as a state have the greatest household income in the country. For the most part, a state of hard working, family oriented neighborhoods.
My parents are buried in New Jersey.

I lived in NYC back in 2006 when things were still relatively decent (economy wise).
I lived on the upper west side (88th and Riverside) in a very nice building in a very nice neighborhood.
However it was very old, and my apt which was a studio, did not have a kitchen, so the whole floor had to share a kitchen. Luckily I had a bathroom in mine, some others were not so lucky.
What Im getting at is how ridiculous it is to live in the city, my tiny little apartment was $2200 a month!!!
Needless to say I could not stay as a student (New York Institute of Technology) there for very long.
The city is a wonderful place to live, but far to expensive!!! I do miss it though
