Highest taxed county

Well the list was released on the highest taxed property tax counties in the u.s.

The top ten are in new york and new jersey, with my county Westchester County leading the pack.
For those who dont know Westchester county is the first northern county just north of nyc.
It runs along the hudson river.
Heres a photo I found on the net.

Wow Jerry! How do you survive with that kind of property tax? We pay 1% here in our county in Ga. and in San Diego we pay 1.25%. We use our homestead exemption in Ga. which saves us another 40% off the entire year tax bill. I swear, I don't know how some people are able to pay such high taxes.

Everything is crazy here Gary:

You must understand , a small cramped, studio apartment in manhattan in a very old building , complete with roaches and mice, could easily rent for 3,000 a month.
Houses here are crazy. A small old wood frame starter home, fixer up, starts at around 400,000 easy.
To show you how things have gotten crazy, when I started out in the department you could buy a home for approx 3 or 4 times your salary. Now its closer to 10 times your salary, makeing it unaffordable to the people who protect you, to live there.
And remember those westchest averages, were averages. They vary greatly from town to town. Remember Westchester county is where the Clintons live, thousands of hollywood celebrities and rock stars.
I could not afford to move there now, if I was starting in the type of home I have.
Some of the taxes in counties are astonimical, and depending on the valuation of your home, or the quality of the school district, its unbelieveable.
Even if you go to where my wife works in the bronx, in 100 year old building a 2 bedroom apartment goes for 1500 dollars. Plus Gas and Electricity(We also pay the highest electrical rates in the WORLD.
Its a tough place for the middle class. Great for the poor(who are given everything, and they have no incentive to work, and for the moneyed people who have an endless pocketbook, but for the working class and the retired old, it is becoming a horror.
They tax us to death, take out money, and give it to the lowlifes, and then say vote for us.
Other new yorkers on this forum can attest to these situations.

Much regards Jerry

Good advice, but unfortunately that is why the policticians court all the lowlife and college kids to vote for them. They tell these people that the other people will take away all your "benefits" unless you vote for them. Certain polictical parties to be unnamed, tell the seniors if you dont vote for their party, they will lose their social security and medicare.
Theres a reason why acorn is financed.
As far as moving, I am a native new yorker who loves it here. Thirty miles south I am in the middle of manhattan. Broadwy, Theatre, museums, music, this is the capital of the entertainment and financial world.
30 miles north, and I have west point, and their px which I am allowed to use.
I am in the great hudson valley, one of gods gifts to nature. Twenty minutes and I am at the shore of the Atlantic Ocean or historic tarrytown(sleepy hollow, icabod crane) The entire mighty Hudson River.
My children all live within 50 miles. I plan on dying in this home, and my ashes scattered in the deep forest on a crisp winter day.
I am in connecticut, or new jersey in a matter of a half or a full hour.
I have lived all over the world at times, and different places in the united states. (Oregon, Washington State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Colorado, San Franciso, San Diego) and I do believe I am at the marrow of the earth. But this is just my experience, and beliefs.
I do love the adirondics. I have another home in saranack lake(right next to lake placid), and I do love it their also, I plan on semi retireing to this place eventually or die trying, once the wife retires. LOL

Much regards Jerry

Born and raised about 40 miles west of Saranac. We visit Lake Placid a couple of times a year and would like to retire there BUT as much as I love that area I refuse to pay the taxes. NY has always been a tax everyone and give the money to those who don't want to work. I remember as a kid people on State assistance had more toys than we did.
I love that area, my favorite is Cranberry Lake.

That area is one of the most pristine areas in the State. There are parts that are rarely if ever visited. One could pitch a tent and not see anyone for years.
Do you remember the storm about 15 years ago, that felled tens of thousands of trees?
Where are you west? I vacation two weeks a year with the wife south of you, on the other side of lake ontario, in the finger lakes. We love that area to death.
We go in August to Watkins Glen for the Nascar race, and then as that as a base, basically do the wine touring and dining all points north toward geneva and beyond on lake seneca.
Crazy for the race, and then the town emptys out. Beautiful wineries with the specialty as you know being reislings. You can get a great evening meal outside over the grape trees for about fifteen to twenty bucks a piece. Thats with a coctail or bottle of wine. We are not big wine drinkers, but I bring back about five cases, that lasts for years. Check out the web site for something like heron hills winery.
Theres even a nice cigar shop(over a hundred years old) in Corning.
Love cruising on the lake, and the drives. Really a special place. God didnt overlook this area either. LOL

Much regards Jerry

Lived in Canton. I was actually back there 2 days after that storm. Took a drive up Rt 3 and was just dumbfounded by the destruction. I think they believe it was a microburst that caused the devastation.
Wife and I visited the fingerlakes a couple of years ago and visited several of the wineries. Wifes favorite place is Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid, We were there 3 weeks ago and about sitting on the deck about dusk and there were a couple of Loons on the lake. Beautiful sounds to close the day.

Thank place has been around for ever. Thats my go to place for venison. I am not really a big meat eater, but I do like fresh game(duck, turkey, venison, elk)
They make the greatest, and I think the chef(or maybee they keep on the tradition) makes some of my wifes favorite german favorites. (spaetzel, streudel, schnitzels). Lovely place to sit on the deck. Its about the only place I eat venison from. Try it , next time you are there.
Did you notice all the shops closed in lake placid? I think the economy has really hit hard there.
I used to go skiing on whiteface mountain, and take the kids for bobsled and luge rides at the olympics facility. And I liked to use the outside speed skateting track. I love to watch speedskaters and use to like to skate, but alas no more. I dont like to fall down anymore.

So we have chewed some of the same dirt in the past.

Regards Jerry

Re: Highest taxed county

I guess then there is a 3rd option, follow another New Yorker and don't pay your Fed taxes, then say you didn't know. You could do this leagally if support for HR 735, infra, was greater. You could also follow him in claim 3 different houses as your primary residence to get various tax breaks or using rent controlled apartments illegally, that might help.

Rangel Rule Act of 2009, HR 735,
would prohibit the Internal Revenue Service from charging penalties and interest on back taxes against U.S. citizens. Under the proposed law, any taxpayer who wrote “Rangel Rule” on their return when paying back taxes would be immune from penalties and interest.

Sounds like this option, would put me in prison and get buggered. Thats a one way device for me(in most instances)
