The Boogie Man on the Dock story

So, I plan on enjoying a cigar on my fishing dock and do some star gazing. My usual light-up time is around 10:30 to 11:00 at night. About 10 days or so ago, there was a new moon (i.e., no moon) and it was very dark.

A little bit of background, but my fishing dock has a 200-foot boardwalk (with railings) from the back of my yard, through some wetland/hammock through a small wooded area and then onto the lake. I don't have the boardwalk lit yet, so you either bring a flashlight and chance looking like an idiot as you walk through unseen spider webs, or you bring a light.

Because the back of my property adjoins some protected wetlands, the boardwalk is also elevated 5 to 6 feet over the ground.

So I make it to the dock, free of creepy crawlies, set up my little deck chair and side-table, and go to toast the foot of my Arturo Fuente 8-5-8 Maduro, when my lighter runs out of propane... crap... my refill can is all the way back in the house.

So I walk all the way back to the house, get the refill can and head back to the dock.

As I'm walking on the boardwalk, I hear something on the boardwalk hop over the railing, and run through the marshy woodlands.

Scared the bejeezus out of me.

So, I make it to the dock (free of spiders), my heart racing, and I finally get to enjoy my smoke. I see a few shooting stars, and sit in the darkness listening to some fish feeding on the lake surface.

Flash forward to the next night.

I'm on my back patio deck (brick pavers), sitting on my chair enjoying the night sky and the motion sensor lights come on. This is not unusual, because sometimes the trees blowing in the wind activate the motion sensors.

I've been sitting there maybe 30 minutes when I notice something in the corner of my eye...

I glance over and see this little lady...

(not the actual picture)

I've lived in Central Florida all of my life and have never seen a fox. (we have small white-tailed dear, some wild boar, turkeys, gopher tortoises, and sandhill cranes.

Apparently there is a female that has a den nearby and has raised some litters of pups...

She glanced over at me, ran through the yard, and headed off towards the neighbor's house.

While probably common for some of you in other parts of the country, this was a real treat for me being an Orlando native.

Karl

P.S. I can only assume this little lady was the "boogie man" or "boogie woman" on the dock the night before. I hope to witness her nightly errands on another night-time smoking adventure.

Re: The Boogie Man on the Dock story

My first thought was a raccoon checking out your area for scraps of food, but the fox is super cool!

Nice Story. I would be scared just going out in the wetlands after dark. Not my choice of habitat.

Re: The Boogie Man on the Dock story

Great Story.....got one a lil like it....

My wife's family have a small farm with 2 spring feed ponds and I have full access to them anytime...one weekend before our lil one was born we had no money and no plans and no kids so we headed out to the ponds. After a few hrs of her talking and talking I asked her to quiet down so I could fish....it was right at sunset so all that was left was about 2/3 of the sun on the Horizon and I saw what appeared to be a large bird slowly glide to the end of the property...didn't say a word to her as she would of started gibbering again. Just as the last bit of the sun had gone down and there was only a bit of light left that big ole bird decided to try to land on the dock...where we were sitting...there was just enough room for us let alone a bird too....I screamed and she screamed and we could feel the wind off the birds wings as it tried to stop....we decided then it was time to go.....that crane still lives out there but I have never seen it near that dock again in over 5 yrs...LOL

Love the "Florida Fox" too!!!

In order to catch the elusive "Florida Fox" that you speak of you must first make sure you have a sturdy Fox Trap:

Once the trap has been purchased you must make absolutely sure that you are using the proper bait. There are two types of well known baits that are highly effective:

My wife and I used to own a cabin at St Mary's Glacier in Colorado. We had a fox that would come up on our back deck under the flood lights almost every night. Sitting in the snow, it sure was beautiful. We put out cat food in a heavy dogfood bowl -- it has to be heavy or the fox will treat the food like "take out."

Is that bath talcum for the fox? I think you should buy a bigger jar.
