I am extra, becaue my immune system is pretty much shot. If my wife gets a cold, I get a bronchial infection for a month, If she gets a bronchial infection, I get pneumonia for two months. I cant win. LOL

Part of this I blame on the military. I can tell you such stories, that would horrify you, on the ineptitude of some of the miltitarys medical practices.

If I ever get any type of flu, I assume I will be a dead man Thats why I smoke alone, and was a bit leary of that fellow who approached me and I gave him a cigar. Too much close contact.

If I go in a diner, even if I am eating in, I ask for my coffee, tea, soda pop either in a can, bottle, or a paper cup. And I watch that when they bring my cup of coffee, or my food, they dont put their fingers near the drinking portion. I sometimes bring my own plastic disposable fork. I just feel more comfortable if I dont know the place.

Tens of thousands die globally every year from the flu.
H1N1 is just one additional contributing strain in the overall flu statistics. Latest report is 5000 H1N1 deaths world wide.
It could turn out to be something big, but looks like all hype right now.

If you want to see more troubling numbers, look at the number of auto related deaths every year. It's much more dangerous to commute to work due to vehicular collision than any risk H1N1 poses.

Re: H1N1 Influenza - Media Hype? or Cause for Alarm? What's your thoughts?

Here is an addendum to what is already being talked about as far as making sure we keep ourselves in a cleaner environment. I think most people know or should know that when we go out to eat at those dinner places that most restaurants serve "dirty" ice which means the ice comes from those containers that have not been cleaned or disinfected and it's the same bucket that they use as a mop bucket. Here's another thing,,,when you are served your tea or water with slices of lemon,,,don't drink it. They have found out that most lemons served in restaurants have not been washed off but only cut into slices and then dumped into the drinks. Bacteria is found on these slices in such volume that you wouldn't even believe it. The wife and I hardly eat out anymore because of the way food is served and would you believe it,,,neither of us has had the flu or cold in the last 3 years and I use to get colds just thinking about it.

I wish they would just shut my school down for a week atleast.. I heard they are 6 kids out sick with the swine flu from my school.

The teachers have the hand sanitizer bottles in their classes but they always run out. They should just shut the school down for a bit and clean everything there.

I just make sure I wash my hands and I'm good. Just glad I am healthy so I can enjoy playing hockey for my school and smoke my cigars.

Charlie...PRAY you don't get this.

I am pretty healthy and very rarely miss work due to sickness and this "Flu" I have is thumping the shit out of me.

102.3 fever and a nasty cough. The Good Cold and Flu medicine has helped but I am kinda shocked how hard this hit me.

My fever is broke and hopefully wont come back and out of 7 in the house 4 will be home.

Its not anymore a killer than any other flu but since its new more are likely to get it.

Shawn

I'm on the Hype train... I think it is an issue that should be address but no where close to the limit that it has reached.

my wife works at DuPont Children's Hosi. in Wilmington, DE...She is seeing a lot of it (80% of the kids who come in), but it attributes to nothing more than a mild flu...all hype to push gov't run HC.. IMHO..

Re: H1N1 Influenza - Media Hype? or Cause for Alarm? What's your thoughts?

My prayers and well wishes to all of you who are ill or have family / friends that are.

I am on day 4 of this crap and it hits you VERY HARD.

I am a big man, 6"4", 250lbs..
This flu has put me on my back. I see the Doctor today.
I will not take "Tamiflu" at this stage.. Too late IMO.

I am not worried about getting over this. Hopefully it will be soon.

I can see how if you had some underlying illness or condition,

This could knock you on your ass or pose a significant problem for you.

Keep your hands clean, and stay home of you are sick.

Vin

I am semi on the hype side, but concerned about this flu shot they have for it , on the news here i see about all the positive spin about the vaccine but i never see them publicize the negative, A relative of mine had a friend at work look like hell the day after they had the shot and also had another of their co workers' husband got the shot and then went into a coma....thats kinda scary.

Re: H1N1 Influenza - Media Hype? or Cause for Alarm? What's your thoughts?

I have survived this ailment, It did hit me like a truck.

Please..
WASH YOUR HANDS... Keep them wet with antibacterial goop as often as possible.
If you are sick, stay home.
If you are immunocompromised.. Take special care of yourself.

My opinion after actually having H1N1 ( validated via a Culture of nasal washings and swabs) For most of us, H1N1 poses no greater threat then the normal strains of seasonal influenza people suffer with each "flu" season.
You will do fine.. after a few days of misery.

For some, who may have a chronic illness, or another underlying condition.. This, along with normal influenza strains could create a serious problem for you or The potential complications arising from the flu, could cause significant problems.

Working in the healthcare field, We need to all be concerned about potential Mutated strains.. Similiar to the mutations we see each year in normal Influenza "A" type strains.
We can all do are part to minimize this possibility by being diligent about how we care for ourselves when ill, making sure if you are given medication of any type, to COMPLETELY finish the prescription.
*PLEASE
( Don't stop taking a prescription medicine simply when you "feel" better.. Please finish the bottle on the Physician prescribed schedule)

Inappropriate use of antibiotics and anti-virals is a major player in new strain creation..
The old saying in this scenerio is very true for these pathogens..

" If it doesn't kill you , it makes you stronger"

The bugs that make you ill, If subjected to medication that is supposed to kill them.. but doesnt, jockeys them into a position to reproduce strains that are tougher, stronger, more virulent and resistant to the medications that were supposed to kill them..

The concept of this scenerio occuring with this virus that is so easily transmitted already.. IMO.. may be cause for alarm..

But..
It's too soon to say...

Take Care.. Stay Healthy .. and God Bless.

I don't think we can know for sure. I think this year will let us know how dangerous it actually is. There's just not a sufficient amount of data yet.
