I heard exactly the same "one in three" quote during our company United Way kickoff meeting from an educational director of a local agency supported by United Way. I do not believe it is an accurate statement; and I stated so to several male employees following the meeting. I also do not appreciate how it reflects on the male parent. I recall several years ago when the March of Dimes was quoted as saying that the greatest number of birth defects was caused by husbands/boyfriends beating the female during pregnancy! Don't jump on me, I abhor the abuse of women and children, but let's not make it look like America is totally nuts.
Money, power, or control, it's one of those three...or all of them.

1/3 is probably not a bad number when you consider it includes violent abuse (which we usually think of) as well as the brother who pinched is little sister's butt when she was nine years old, the girl who was fondled on a date (which she may have liked but didn't agree to), being gropped in a crowd by an unknown, etc. And, then there is the verbal abouse using sexual words and inuendos, even freaky stares. It all depends on how the question is asked and the intent of the answerer.

You have to wonder how they come up with these numbers. That said, every child should be aware of the risks, and know what to do when that kind of thing happens. All to often shame and fear stop those serious cases of abuse from being reported, and that is very wrong.

This actually happens more then you would believe (I work with teens). I hear of abuse often. I would say that 1/3 is a little high. A lot of abuse doesn't get reported, especially if it happens within the family. This is sad that this is going on with kids. I would also encourage parents to talk to the kids about it more than relying on the school.

Re: Need help with math problem...

yeah...but how do you teach kids (or adults) to believe you if you stretch your data to the limit everytime? I think it leads to no body believing anything, and any good that could've come from it, is lost to skepticism.

I wouldn't teach them to believe statistics, but to do the right thing if anything ever happened. People who violate kids are actually really good at it. Lets just say a uncle molests a 8 yr old, many times he will tell the child, "you can't tell anyone what we did, you don't want to ruin our family do you". Sick crap like that. Of course no 8 year old wants to ruin the family. You just want to educate your kids that they should always talk to you no matter what has happen to them.
