Re: I want to quit smoking

Honestly, after 2 years of being a "non-cigarette" smoker I can say that it was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. First, you will seriously have to tell yourself that the addiction is all in your brain. It's chemical and it will scream to be appeased. It will take many changes and tons of mental discipline in order to succeed. First thing, forget about the cutting back idea. It fools your brain into thinking that if you wait long enough you will be rewarded with a cigarette. That is the hardest thing to do, to tell yourself, "oh well, I know that I went 1 full day or 2 without them so if I have 1 now I know that I can go another 2 days". NO. That method is a sure fire way to fail. You have to give yourself a date and then not have any, ever again. If you have to use gum, candy, nicotine gum whatever, use it. But stick to your date. I tried the patch and I found that it was just painful. Tricking your brain into going with lower and lower doses of nicotine was just painful. I just decided to go cold turkey after while because I wanted to know that once my withdrawl symptoms went away that I was done (took about a month). A few challenges you will face will be how to handle stressful situations without them, boredom, driving, coffee, food, sex as well. It's worth it. You can do it. One thing is not to replace your cigarettes with cigars. Try not to inhale them. I don't know if you do or not. I only started smoking cigars 4 months ago so I don't really fear a relapse because I will NOT go through that feeling ever again. It stinks. Keep telling yourself that. Once today is over, tomorrow will get easier. So on and so on. Good luck you can succeed.

Re: I want to quit smoking

I smoked cigarettes for twenty-five years. Two to three packs a day at times, never less than a pack a day. I quit seven or eight years ago. I can remember the date (Feb 16) but not the year. What worked for me, worked for me, it may not work for you.

If you want to quit, you will. Quit cold turkey. Don't have a "last cigarette". Make the last one you smoked the last one you ever smoke. If you have another one, quit again. Don't set a date in the future. If you do set a date, then you don't really want to quit.

Quitting is all in the mind but you need something to occupy your hands as well as your mind. Cigars are probably not a good idea while you're trying to quit smoking.

If you have any questions you can PM me because I might lose this thread.

Re: I want to quit smoking

Hey Jesse... For me it came down to A. did I believe that cigarettes were causing problems in my life? B. if so, was there a way to make it stop? C. was I willing to do ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING it takes to achieve my goals? ;D

You'll do it when your time comes. Don't rush it, and you'll do it when you do it.

Re: I want to quit smoking

I quit 5 years ago after about 2 years of trying. But I really just substituted chewing tobacco in place of the cigs. I smoked about a pack a day. With chewing tobacco, a can will last me about a week. At least the lungs feel better. Nicotine is a hard thing to kick. I believe that is why I tend to like the higher strength cigars.

Quitings Easy - Did it a thousand times. Kidding! It's hard. Smoked cigarettes for about 35 years - went cold turkey on the cigs and switched to cigars - I'm happy. No more cough - feel better.

Good Luck Jesse - You Can Do It!

Re: I want to quit smoking

Crap, I still smoke 2 or so packs a day. I only have about 4 or 5 cigs worth of tobacco in my ryo bag. Hope I can drop the habit after that.

Re: I want to quit smoking

Since you're smoking cigars still, nicotine is not going to be your problem. The issue is going to be purely psychological. I quit 5 years ago and did it cold turkey. The only way I was able to do it was to break it down into smaller battles. Waking up in the morning, driving, drinking, after eating, before bed; these were all times in life where I "needed" a cigarette. Beat them one at a time and acknowledge to yourself that you have. Realize you don't need that cigarette when you wake up or after you eat. Having cigars will help, but don't let them replace the cigarettes.

To put it to you plainly, cigarettes with drinking was the most difficult part. I stopped drinking for four months in order to be able to kick smoking. That was a tough one.

Good luck, you can do it if you really want to.

Once you truly realize that you can live without them, the battle is done.

Re: I want to quit smoking

My quitting was purely monetary; If I spent $$$ on stogies, I would cut that much out of the cig budget. The more I got into cigars, the less I smoked till I was just done. I'm making it sound easier than it is, but it helped for me to relegate it to hurting my wallet more than my lungs (oddly enough).
So I guess you could say cigars saved my life suck on that SCHIP

Re: I want to quit smoking

Jessie,

I have been done smoking cigarettes for about 4 years now and what I did was take something called Zyban (which is actually just Wellbutrin but under a different name). If you talk to your doctor, he can prescribe you Zyban (nothing like Chantix at all, completely different) or he could just give you a Wellbutrin Rx to save money.

Mind you, I was depressed because I had been in a bad car accident in which my best friend died and I almost did but it made it soooo easy to quit smoking and it also helped on many other fronts. I still take it today and am able to smoke a cigarette on occasion if I want and not crave any more after that.

If you really would rather not go that route, I cannot recommend Snus enough. Not the Camel SNUS stuff but actual Swedish snus. It is a packet of tobacco in a teabag like material that you put in your upper lip. You do not spit and it does not make you sick, make you stink and it also is very, very discreet. I know at least 10 people that have quit smoking cigarettes via snus use. Also, since the tobacco in snus is not fire cured, it is pasturized, the level of carcinogens are so low, in Sweden they were able to remove the warning about cancer from the cans. I was doing snus for 2 months before my wife ever knew I had any in my mouth!! haha. She saw a can and asked, otherwise she wouldn't have known. I wasn't keeping it from her, I just thought it funny she didn't notice.

Let me know if you are interested (it makes it a LOT easier) and I can either send you some flavored kind (peach or strawberry or mint) or if you want to get a "free" can (you pay $1 shipping), then go to Getsnus.com

Let me know and I will be happy to help any way possible.

Good luck and make sure to keep us posted!! I have faith in you!!
