Southern Rock Question
The wife and I were watching CMT’s Top 20 greatest southern rock songs show last night and she asks me a question. Who are the current southern rock bands? I had no answer for her. Anyone want to have a go at this one here is the list that CMT put together. Not a bad list I definitely would not have put Sweet Home Alabama above Freebird (maybe that is the redneck in me) but to each there own.
CMT’s Top 20 Southern Rock Songs 20 - The Allman Brothers (Gregg) - I'm No Angel 19 - Charlie Daniels - The South's Gonna Do It Again 18 - The Outlaws - Green Grass And High Tides 17 - The Marshall Tucker Band - Heard It In A Love Song 16 - Blackfoot - Train, Train 15 - The Ozark Mountain Daredevils - If You Wanna Get To Heaven 14 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Three Steps 13 - Georgia Sattellites - Keep Your Hands To Yourself 12 - Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' With Disaster 11 - Wet Willie - Keep On Smilin' 10 - Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around And Fell In Love 09 - .38 Special - Hold On Loosely 08 - Little Feat - Dixie Chicken 07 - Hank Williams Jr. - All My Rowdy Friends 06 - The Allman Brothers Band - Midnight Rider 05 - Charlie Daniels - The Devil Went Down To Georgia 04 - The Marshall Tucker Band - Can't You See 03 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird 02 - The Allman Brothers Band - Ramblin' Man 01 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama

Re: Southern Rock Question
I can't answer that question. But I know a couple of people who can.

Re: Southern Rock Question
That list pretty much covers the current southern rock bands.
Most of them still tour. NCRM |

Which reminds me, Steve Earle, Copperhead Road. How can a song about weed, bootlegging, and 'Nam not qualify? That in turn reminded me of Robert Earl Keen, Jr., The Road Goes On Forever. Maybe the definitive version was recorded by Joe Ely, although a friend of mine saw R.E.K. perform it live, solo, and acoustic at the Cambridge Folk Festival a few years ago. I bet that was something to see. Edited to add: and what about Dwight Yoakam & Flaco Jimenez, Carmelita? Nashville Pussy? Rev. Horton Heat? Todd Snider? Junior Brown?

Re: Southern Rock Question
I went and Looked up Copperhead on Google. i found a country band from Amarillo Texas. I wonder if they know they took another bands name.
The band I was talking about, Copperhead, all went to the same Highschool as i did and was a Southern Rock band in the '90's. I was good friends with the bassist. Check out this site if you like Southern Rock. i think you guys will enjoy this Bands sound they all went to School with me and these guys rock!!! http://copperhead.info/ You can listen to some of there music there. More of their music here: http://www.myspace.com/90sbandcopperhead They are: Neil Carswell - Lead Vocals & Guitar Jon Byrd - Lead Guitar Brad Durden - Keyboards Tony Hawkins - Bass Eric Suttlemyre - Drums Enjoy CBF ![]()

The more I thought about this the more I think most of the southern rock guys have gone to country radio. It's a tough sell to the west coast labels now compared to some of the stuff on the radio now. Another of my all time favorites is Ballad of Curtis Lowe by Skynyrd (can't find it on any of my cd's). I'm sure I will think of more now that I am looking around. I will have to try and remember to listen to Greg Martins (Kentucky Headhunters) radio show and see what he's playing.

Thanks for reminding me I almost always forget about that little ol’ band from Texas. What about Tush ZZ Top My Heads in Mississippi ZZ Top Black Betty Ram Jam Did anyone see the tribute that they did to Buck Owens on the Academy of Country Music Awards. That was a killer band Buddy Alan (Bucks son), Dwight Yoakam, Brad Paisley, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Travis Barker (blink-182), Tom Brumley (Bucks steel guitar player), and Chris Hilman (Byrds)

Re: Southern Rock Question
Montgomery Gentry and Van Zant (bros from 38 spcl and skynyrd, the replacement) are probably the closest from pop country.
Unfortunately, we don't get much good music here in Buffalo....although David Allan Coe is coming up soon. |
