Smile Bicycle ****

Seeing how there’s some real interest in cycling on CS, I thought I would show a little bicycle **** and hopefully y’all will show off your steed. This is my newest bike, a Pegoretti 8:30 AM with all Campy Record 10, Campy wheels, and Stella stem. The bike rides great for all aluminum, stiff yet not draining. For those that think you need all carbon fiber, try riding a frame built by a modern-day master. I also enjoy the traditional frame geometry, the sloping does not do much for me. Pegoretti does a short top tube, which I was looking for and the best looking chain/seat stays ever conceived in metal. Dario Pegoretti has built frames for the best riders, winning the most prestigious of events. He was also the first to TIG weld bike frame in Italy.

Re: Bicycle ****

Definatley a nice set up.

You ride along the Charles at all or in Boston ? Definately tons of sites to see. Keep your eyes on the road !!!

Or are you using it to ride to Churchills and Cigar Masters and get preffered parking ?

Sweet bike and for the money it is a great value. I ride a few times a week and love it. It is funny, if people knew how much that a great road bike cost they would die. I am guessing a few years worth of cigar allowance for you. I am inches away from puling the trigger on a Serotta myself. My fat ass has no business on a bike that nice though. I need so stop grilling out everyday!!! I love that Campy stuff and I am sure you do too. Congrats now go ride.

Thanks.

Currently, Stanza dei Sigari is the only cigar place I like in Boston. CM tries to charge the "Lighting Fee" and the service is horrible. The Chimay on tap is the only good thing they have going for them. Churchills is nice, but just kind of dull and no full bar. Stanza will more to look at inside than the other places, and I like getting a sub at Il Pannino Express before having a cigar; no wait for a table and good prices for an honest sub, pasta or slice.

I'll ride down to the north end on my bike, have a gelato and then ride somewhere else. Not a fan of bike paths at all. I find them more trecherous than any road. Sounds crazy, but many will agree. There's no rules on the bike path and everyone is on free for all, big wheels, hand holding, rollerblades.... Not like the bike lanes in Europe which are quite different.

I just got a new bike and I'm getting back into cycling after a 8 year hiatus, but I don't think I'd post it here, would probably be laughed at

LOL! Yep. I never tell anyone what I spent. To most people, spending $3000 or more on a road bike is insanity. But if you factor the value of longevity, and pleasure / performance over that lifespan, it all comes out. Funny, because the people who would mock us for spending that kind of cash on a bike wouldn't bat an eye at someone who buys a Porsche.

  • Geese
  • Oblivious women with baby carriages walking three abreast (no pun intended)
  • Questionable path maintenance
  • Parents allowing their children to waggle all over the path 50 or 100 yards away out of their control that create a danger for everyone and who are out of reach so there's no way to keep them out of harm's way
  • People walking dogs with long leashes on one side of the path when they're on the opposite side of the path
  • Senior citizens not paying attention...
And then the laugh is when something goes wrong, these same people who are not observing basic rules turn around and blame it on OUR speed. "Hey, asshole... my speed isn't the issue, it's your irresponsibility to control your own actions or that of your bratty kids!

I never understood why people seem to think that just because they're in a park, that the basic rules of courtesy and right-of-way that you observe on the road don't apply. I always ask if they drive on the road the way they amble through the park, and get the 'deer in the headlights' reaction when it finally sinks in. It's as though they came to the realization that they're NOT the only ones on the path, and there are actually other people around them. Imagine that!

True story, when I cycle, I'm always in control, and when coming up behind someone, call out: "ON YOUR LEFT!!!" (or right, sometimes, because stupid people often force us to accommodate their idiocy...). Did that when coming up behind a group of rollerbladers, a couple of which were waggling all over the place. I yelled out "ON YOUR LEFT" three times as I approached, and one of the bladers decided just as I was passing to swing wide. I clipped him with my shoulder and he went down like a sack of bad potatos... that's what happens when you get slammed by a 190 pound biker passing by at 20MPH. I suspect he's been exercising more caution ever since.

Re: Bicycle ****

i still have my trek 1000 with the flat handlebars. i prefer flat bars since i am too uncoordinated for the road bike bars. i have bmx pedals, i like to ride flat footed. i ride about 15-20 miles in the morning. i am either looking to upgrade or maybe a new bike sometime next year. i keep looking at the bianchis with the paint scheme Pantani (best f'n rider ever!) bikes had and think about if he hadn't used drugs so much and overdosed. anyway there is a great website full of reviews for those that like to weigh such things before buying. it is www.roadbikereview.com everything from bikes to pedals to water bottles. thanks for bringing this thread up.

I was kind of close on a Serotta Ti with carbon seat stays. A place near me does bulk orders on a custom geometry which worked good for me and was a similar price to the Pegoretti, but I can't seem to warm up to Ti frames. With Seven and IF down the street from me, I could certainly get something special. Serotta is a good brand and probably the most intrinsically significant out of the big USA brands. Go for it.

Campagnolo is the only components I would consider.

I use to have this Fondriest that was a great frame (taken at the bike shop after swapped components to the Pegoretti). Such a rocketship and I recommend the brand highly; not many brands left that do the ENTIRE MANUFACTURE in Italy. The top tube was too long for me, and the smaller size would've had a short head tube. I didn't want too many spacers. I sold it on EBay and someone got the deal of a lifetime on it. Oh well. I sold my Merckx and Battaglin on EBay as well

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, 'cause I ride Campy too, but what is it about Campagnolo vs. Shimano or others that you prefer? What kinda makes me nuts is that they don't have interchangable parts from one iteration to the other... their 8-speed derailleur isn't compatable with a 10 speed lever, and so on. It's very frustrating.

I'll have to be posting my picture later next week or so! Bought the Specialized Comp and still considering wether to get it with the Ultegra gruppo, very pricey but maybe worth it. It comes with 105.

Re: Bicycle ****

Here is my bike(and my beefy thighs) It is a Jamis Diablo bought back when the Diablo was a hardtail-now they are full suspension. Without the forks this bike weighs about 21 lbs. That makes a difference on those mountain roads.

I took this picture to put on my profile page for the MS ride I am doing in September. I will post a link one of these days soon and I hope the BOTL's and SOTL's will help support this cause.

For not being "highest end" the Ultegra group set is very good. I never had an issue with my other bikes with Ultegra on it.

The best value from Shimano, worth the extra $$$ from 105.

You can rebuild Campagnolo. A ten year old Campagnolo Record grouppo is still nice. The extra touches Campagnolo does to their stuff and the passion they instill into the design. Shimano makes some fine stuff, but I wouldn’t buy Campagnolo for my fishing rod.
