Dog Owners - What Do You Feed Your Dog?

Here's the deal - have two dogs, a stupid beagle and a blue heeler/border collie mix. Both use to get Science Diet dry mix with a can of Science Diet wet (can) for dinner. They kind of got tired of it - taking longer to eat. Tried some different stuff and ended up with Iams as the wet can still mixed with Science Diet dry. They have been on this for 3 years now and still love it. Problem is suddenly can't find the Iams at the stores anymore.

So now I'm searching for a new food and thought I'd get some suggestions. Tried Pro Plan (looked like slices in gravy) tonight and they scarfed it up in no time - licked the bowls across the floor. Problem is the amount in the can didn't seem to compare to the Iams - almost would have to give them two cans, that or extra dry mix.

So - what's everyone feeding? My dogs, even the stupid beagle are family - so I'm not looking for cheap supermarket junk - I want good nutritional content - but of course they do have to like it.

Ideas?

Ron

If you are looking for nutrition, go no further than Timberwolf Organics. They have some of the best food, period. It's a little pricey, and you'll probably have to buy it directly from the company (via their website), but it is good stuff. There is also some good info on Chazhound.com forums on different high quality foods. Hope this helps.

Well my chihuahua and my sisters german shepherd are on science diet, my sisters a vet so we get it DIRT cheap. But must of the time the chihuahua is picky and we cut up some table scraps and mix it in his foor for dinner. The shepherd loves it to but will normally eat the dry science diet. I'll ask my sister when I see her and shoot a pm if she has some revolutionary answer.

My dog eats the light Science Diet, and Old Mother Hubbard treats.

I don't mess with the wet stuff.

Re: Dog Owners - What Do You Feed Your Dog?

I did quite a bit of research on what to feed my Rottweiler before I got him. After speaking with many breeders it was decided that InovaEvo was the best diet for him.

Since I don't have the time nor the inclination to do the all natural B.A.R.F. diet, the Inova was the next best thing. High in protein and with low carbs and all natural ingredients... its for active dogs.

I recommend not using the Iams or the science diet stuff since most of their product is actually unhealthy for dogs. Use Canidae, or Inova, or something along those lines.

I give my German Shepherd the Harvest Baked Chicken that is basically the house brand of Pet Smart. Stacks up well nutritionally against the higher priced foods, seems healthier than the "mainstream" premiums (Science Diet, Eukanuba, etc)...and the older dog formula provides good nutrients to combat obesity, arthritis, etc....

Re: Dog Owners - What Do You Feed Your Dog?

Forgot to add why Iams and Purina aren't that great for dogs in my last post.... sorry.

I frequently browse the Nutrition and Health Forums on Rottweiler.net and have learned quite a bit from some of the breeders and such there as well as speaking with local breeders in my area.

Dog foods like Iams and Purina and other "low quality" dog foods you buy at the Wal-Mart and such have a couple good ingredients such as lamb and stuff but the majority of the ingredients are things like beaks and feet and things that aren't fit for humans to eat. There are also quite a bit of chemicals and processed material in those types of dog foods which over time can be bad for your puppy.

All natural Dog foods such as RoyalCanin, Canidae, InnovaEvo, California Natural, and Wolf-King use all natural ingredients and no chemicals to give your Dog a balanced diet. It is pretty much fit for human consumption.

Talking to pet owners and breeders, most of them use these types of foods when they can't feed their dogs the B.A.R.F. diet for whatever reason.

Re: Dog Owners - What Do You Feed Your Dog?

My dog gets Purina Dog Chow, and has for all of his 6 years. We just leave a bowl out and he eats when he wants to. No complaints so far.

One thing I did see in the grocery store recently was this gravy stuff in a squeeze bottle that you can put on dry dog food. Or you can try it on your turkey at Thanksgiving. Whatever. But maybe some of the higher end companies like Iams and Science Diet make something similar.

This guy hit it right on the head. Innova Evo is as expensive as the stuff I use (Timberwolf Organics), but Canidae is very well priced, and much better than Science Diet, or any of the other "premiums".

My dog eats Eukanuba.

It is only sold in pet stores but well worth it. It keeps her healthy and looking good.

Cool.. thanx, I appreciate that. I've always had German Shepherds before and this will be my first Rottie. His name is Samhain and he'll be 1 year old in October. He's already 105lbs and is expected to top out at 140. Can't wait.... he's just plain massive!

Thanx, haven't used Timberwolf but I've heard good things about it. One of my buddies feeds his Alaskan Malamoit Timberwolf.

Dog food of that quality and Caliber (Timberwolf,Innova, etc) are really the best to go for maximum nutrition. Not saying that there's anything wrong with the regular store brands... I just wouldn't feed 'em to my dog.
