Well, ya'll can have your Krispy Cremes. We gotta little place here in Round Rock, called the Lonestar Bakery, that makes donuts that are so good it makes you want to slap yo mama. Never had a better donut anywhere, and I don't care how much transfat they have in them.

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard University School of Public Health, praised New York health officials for considering a ban, which he said could save lives.

“Artificial trans fats are very toxic, and they almost surely causes tens of thousands of premature deaths each year,” he said. “The federal government should have done this long ago.”

AAlmeter, of Club Stogie, responded "While they are a danger, trans fatty acids are not nearly as dangerous as the knives and forks we use every day."

So there you have it. Weather and traffic after these messages...

What's the difference between them banning trans fats that are bad for you vs. having any health codes?

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

If they want to ban smoking, they should definitely ban trans fats. They serve no purpose and are just harmful. They should’ve banned this stuff long ago, but the big corporations probably have thwarted this for a long time. Trans fats are just to make more profit, as smoking is a conscious decision by the smoker; neither are good for you, but trans fats are much more insidious. 50% of school age children will be obese, hmmm… I wonder why…

Good article.

Then publish the information and let people decide for themselves. If we keep defining the defintions of "dangerious" "toxic" and "catastrophic" down, we'll all be forced to eat shit like wheat germ and alfalfa sprouts and drink soy milk. This is waaaaaaaaaaaay too much government intrusion into our daily lives. The government peeping in on phone lines scares me much less than this, as it affects everybody, all the time.

Good article.
I agree that this is part of it but laziness has a huge affect on the obesity.

People, people.....what are you saying? Banning legal substances, products, anything because "it's bad for you" is the worst slippery slope ever! Who has the right to decide what's bad for me? What ever happened to the right to pursue happiness? If I want to ride a motorcyle without wearing a helmet, it's my a$$ and I don't want anyone else to pay my medical bills if I go down & get hurt. If I want to smoke cigars all day long, I take whatever risk is associated to my health and I hold no one else responsible. If I want to eat Krispy Kremes until I'm a 600 lb blob (fully knowing the risks, I agree labeling is a good thing) then why should any city tell me I can't?

More realistically, If I want to have the occasional french fry, doughnut or potato chip cooked in a trans fat oil, while maintaining my otherwise healthy eating habits, who has the right to deny me that?

You can't get out of life alive. Too much of anything is bad for you. As long as we educate people as to the risks they take, and they don't hurt anyone else while they take them, the government(s) have no business trying to regulate our personal choices.

Whew...sorry for the rant, and it's not directed towards anyone specifically. Personal rights issues just get me all fired up. The market itself is already taking care of this issue. I'd bet that without any government interference, trans fats will virtually disappear from our diets in a few more years as more people choose to purchase foods without trans fats. Education and personal responsibility will trump regulation every day of the week.

Does that mean making heroin and cocaine illegal was the wrong decision?

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

Lead free paint, lead free gasoline?

Mercury-free fillings?

Cocaine-free coca-cola?

DDT? Thalidomide? Phenphen?

One of government's functions is to protect citizens from corporations that would sacrifice public safety for a quick buck.

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

Excuse me while I poke my brain out with a Q-tip, tuck my dick well between my legs, and bring myself to a state of mind where I would want nannies to sit around me nonstop to keep me from injuring myself.

Once I have meditated in this uncomfortable position (for me at least) and I feel I have a thorough understanding of your POV, I will most likely respond pointing out that Chester Montgomery Kreme III is not holding anyone hostage while shoving tasty treats down his or her helmet wearing, CO monitor having, hydrogen dioxide fearing throat. Mr. Kreme is simply giving the legions of dumbasses exactly what they line up in their BMWs (with trendy gym clothes in the trunk) to get. The man would be brutalized by the mob of "common folk" were they not to get their morning rush of sugar and caffeine. He is the victim here, not the fatheads who can't figure out, without some sort of gub'ment mandate, that doughnuts really aren't all that healthy.
