Bad stuff.

It's all $$. They might save $ .01 a donut by using the cheaper oils. Use of oils (solids) containing Trans fats should be banned altogether if you ask me. I'll pay the extra pennies per serving that using non-trans fat oils cost.

They need that crap for biodiesel anyway.

Education and personal responsibility. Unfortunately, many people lack both of these and will look to blame someone when they run into problems. Better to just outlaw stuff so people don't start suing.

Yea these fats can be removed without any change in taste. They are only put into oils to make the oil last longer in the fryer or on the shelf. If we lose them we can all continue to enjoy whatever foods we want without a sacrifice in taste.

Moses your kidding yourself if you think that 50% of school aged children are fat due to the use of trans isomerized fats in restraunts. (which is the ONLY thing and the only place that iy would be banned under this plan)

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

And how many of you here who think that this ban is a good thing really believe it'll stop at just that? It's the first shot fired in the war of incrementalism against "bad" food.

By the way, for those who think it's just about "corporate greed", I wonder how many of you have investments in food companies that rely on profits to send you your dividend checks.

Rob, don't bother. Just assume the position I mentioned earlier. Its a little uncomfortable at first, but once you slide into the coma of living life without personal responsibility and blaming everyone else for your problems, it becomes damn comfortable.

good grief!! What ever happened to letting everyone know just how bad it is for you and then you make up your own mind if you want to ingest it or not. Is there no free will anymore???

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

Sounds like a class action law suit in the making. If the city is willing to consider a ban, I'm sure someone somewhere will find some poor soul who's been oppressed by this long enough now that it's ruined their life. Hell it's kinda like suing the Mc Donalds for getting burnt with their hot coffee...

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

I agree with Ghostrider about the lawsuits in the making. The fast food places have already been sued in NY for making kids fat. Funny thing-you eat a Big Mac and a jumbo fries every day and you get fat. Funny thing #2-the folks doing the law suits have been single parent families on public assistance-how do the kids get the money to go to McD's every day? In a more serious vein regarding the outlawing of trans fats, I would agree to outlaw them in any school system or other food source such as some soup kitchens that receive govt money to assist in their operation. I would disagree with outlawing them in any privately operated and owned business. I am a hard core conservative with a wide libertarian streak when it comes to the govt helping (interfering with) me in the day-to-day conduct of my life. Paul

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

It seems like putting the money into education and labeling (that's going to be spent on the PR campaign and legal battle to get this through) instead would be a better idea. Simply banning the substance in restaurants doesn't really help people learn *why* transfats might be really bad for you. I'm not usually one to gripe about gov't intrusion ... but this is f'in ridiculous. Launch an honest and well-funded campaign to inform people about the dangers, but don't tell them what they can and can't do to their own bodies. “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.”

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

im pretty sure in 2003 congress passed a law saying that people couldnt bring a class action lawsuit against fast food companies for making them fat (or for the health problems associated)

Then maybe heroin should be legal? Yes, I am comparing the two. Both are harmful, and both were legal at one point until some "concerned" people thought it should be illegal. Looks to me that trans fat is addictive; there's a lot of fat people around and they didn't get that way without a lot of repetition of eating trans fats when there are healthy alternatives. How many go right for the donut instead of an apple when they are both side-by-side? Must be the mental addictiveness of unhealthy food...

The Food and Drug Administration celebrates its centenary this year; it was founded during the administration of well-know socialist, Theodore Roosevelt.

You know, I know opinions may vary on this topic, but generally speaking I'm pretty happy that there's a government agency regulating the amount of fecal matter in ground beef.

If you want to be healthy, choose from group one. If you want it to taste good, choose from group two.

While they are a danger, trans fatty acids are not nearly as dangerous as the knives and forks we use every day. We should only allow spoons, or at the very least we should provide clear warning labels (using pictures only, of course), to warn people of the dangerous edges and tines. And don’t even get me started on toothpicks! Why those weren’t outlawed ages ago I’ll never know.
