I bet that when Aristotle said

he never figured on people voluntarily signing up to be on the slavery side of things.

I understand the argument, but donuts and heroin? It's a stretch. Don't get me wrong, I never had just one donut, but you don't OD on donuts.

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

I usually don’t comment on things like this on the internet, as it really doesn’t matter what I think or say, it will change nothing, but I will add my on this one.
I don’t think anyone government or otherwise has the right to tell me what I can and can not eat, drink, smoke, chew, where, drive, look a, listen too, or say. That is the definition of FREE . And saying that they are doing it for the overweight kids, , if you don’t want fat kids, cook them healthy foods yourself, don’t feed them fast food 14 times a week and blame it on McDonalds. Maybe kick there a$$ out from in front of the TV and put them to work doing something productive, or at least play with something other than the computer or video games.
With this being said, to back up my position a bit, I AM FAT, I do not blame anyone but myself, I do not actively chose to be fat, but I do not actively do anything to change the fact either. I follow the pattern of being a fast food addict, not so much because I like it, but it is convenient. I would much rather eat home cooked food, he!! I’d rather cook home cooked food, but I am single and during the work week it is easer for me to eat on the run. However, it is not the McDonalds, the Krispy Kreams, or any of the countless other items that make me fat, it is the fact that I eat them in quantity that causes my obesity…scratch that I hate that word it makes it sound so acceptable, FAT it’s the only word that can describe the problem, anything else just adds to the problem, if you can’t take being called FAT do something about it.
Stop blaming society for individual’s inability to control their own life!!!!

This is not the government’s place, if enough people stop eating at these places due to their unhealthy food, I bet they will change what they are doing, or at least they will close up and you won’t have to be tempted by them any more. They don’t make you eat it any more than the government should be able to tell me not to.

Rant over. Carry on.

My sentiments exactly. If there's a group of people who feel that strongly about trans fat being a stealth killer, let them take donations and run commercials during soap operas, trashy talk shows and cartoons.

Oh, yes, Big Brother! Please protect me from myself. I'm just to F'n stupid to make any decisions on my own whatsoever. Won't you please come to my home and watch everything I do all the time, so that nothing bad ever happens to me?

We can sit on the couch eating granola bars and rice cakes while we watch Oprah tell us all about how to get in touch with our feminine side. By the way... how did she get to be that big, anyway? Do you think it was from eating raw broccoli?

There's a difference between monitoring the food supply to ensure it's not poisoned or infested with deadly bacteria or viruses, and a Jihad against "evil corporate greed" which forces us to eat their food. And the fact that you don't see that really scares me.

This is just like the "Great Sacchirin Panic" of years ago, and guess what? More bullshit research that drove bullshit reactions from bullshit lobbyists to make bullshit regulations that resulted in bullshit products which ended in a bullshit result because Sacchirin is back on the market.

Nope. Toothpaste is on the hit list next. If you swallow it, it can be very harmful to your body.

They need that crap for biodiesel anyway.
Bingo!

I think a lot of you guys are missing the point. I see a lot of "trans fats make things taste good" or "healthier means gross" type of arguments.

Not true.

You will still have your fries, potato chips, fried chicken, donuts etc....just made with better oils. Instead of "partially hydrogenated oils"- which are oils with a cheap plastic-like material added in the creation process- you will have natural oils and fats in your food- hydrogenated has nothing to do with good taste- instead- as Dave is saying it's about money. They use oil and add a cheap alternative to save some cash.

So your food will taste just as good- if not better- made with better and healthier ingrdients! Does not mean the food is not still bad for ya!

Just think- back in the days where things were homemade or not mass produced so much most things did not contain these products and they still tasted good!

Moses your kidding yourself if you think that 50% of school aged children are fat due to the use of trans isomerized fats in restraunts. (which is the ONLY thing and the only place that iy would be banned under this plan)

Re: I can't believe this hasn't been brought up.

I'll smoke in the open and take the fine if they wanna run after me to give it to me for smoking! Trans FATS change fat storage and are harder to burn in the case of losing weight. It changes the structure of the DNA in the body. You are altering your genetic structure by taking them in. I prefer non hydrogenated lard, butter, coconut oils, fish oils etc. Now, Calorie restriction diets and all will come unglued to hear the use of things like Coconut oil etc...and possible connections with CVD. Stop with the salt too...!!
I often kid with the children here...that the bugs in us and outside us will get us one day anyway if we don't die early from some untoward circumstances.

Ok let me see if I understand this argument, and why its false
1. if heroin and donuts were both at one time legal, (true)
2. and they are both harmful, (true)
3. and people became concerned with one (heroin!) and made it illegal (false)
4.then they must both be equally dangerous to the public good, equally addictive and should both be illegal (false)

Your making a few true statements then jumping far accross a cavern of untruth, hoping no one realizes it. The two (donuts and heroin) are not intrinsically equal, no matter how much you want them to be. The health effects of heroin far eclipse the same by donuts. I hope you would agree.

By the same argument, what percentage of americans would reach for the vial of heroin if sat side by side with a apple? What if they chose the apple, does that mean heroin isnt addictive? or people just dont like the taste of heroin ? Does that mean the apple is more addictive?
NO, on all accounts, just like the choice of a donut or an apple, its just about a free will choice governed NOT by addiction but by our very nature. We seek out foods that are "bad" for us because they have the highest amount of energy. No one is going to be able to stop that no matter how many "bad" foods you outlaw. For whatever food becomes outlawed the population will find more high energy "bad" foods to consume and kill themselves with. Then there will always be something new to outlaw. Thats the definition of a slippery slope.

With that being said, I say outlaw all trans fats if they have little effect other then increasing the shelf life of oils. Just dont equate heroin and doughnuts or and illegal addictive drug with any food, because they are not the same.

9 out of 10 doctors, fat people and junkies agree
