I mean, is anyone else getting Club Stogie on a cellular phone/PDA? I dont just mean seeing the gorilla icon, I mean sending and receiving PM's, reading posts, etc... I am, finally. The picture below shows me getting Club Stogie on a Sprint PPC6700. Obviously there are some caveats here, but lets start with the positives. Ill post the caveats later. After a couple months, I am finally able to log in (user ID and password) to CS on my cell phone, see all forums, and read/respond to PM's. I can also upload pictures and view others' images. This is a great option for those who cant log into CS during the day. I am getting download speeds similar to a traditional PC with a medium-quality DSL connection as well...
Pic 1: CS Mobile! ![]() There are a couple of caveats to this - you almost need to have a phone running Windows Mobile 5 and a QWERTY keypad. This leaves the PPC6700 (Sprint) and Treo 700w/700wx (Verizon / Sprint respectively). The Sprint EVDO network is available on both handsets, allowing a 400-700k download. I havent used the VZ network yet (and probably wont). Forum pages load relatively quickly, but I have found that things really fly if I disable the avatars under "User Controls" and "Edit options". The user avatars take up a good amount of bandwidth, and some are NSFW. Also, the PPC6700 has a good full-screen display (320x240), but there is still a lot of scrolling required using the joystick (?) seen on the upper right of the device. So, is anyone else in the same boat? |

Ummm, I have not tried it yet on my BlackBerry (VZW 7130e)... But I'm guessing based upon my other experiences it will be a lot of scrolling.

I have a Motorolo Q on the Verizon network, I'll have to give it a try.

Yeah - I made a post about using mine a couple of weeks ago. Treo 650 is what I'm using. Helps kill the time when I have to be on a job site waiting for engineers, building inspectors, etc etc.

Hey Ron, thanks for the reply. Which browser are you using, the included Blazer browser or an aftermarket? Can you use the login scripts with Blazer and see the forums and your PM's?

I have to assume that in most places, the performance of Verizon will be similar to that of Sprint - their network footprints are very similar. I have seen fast downloads with Sprint personally, but I havent used the VZ network. I use the touchscreen on the PPC6700 a lot with CS... I have heard that the Q was not equipped with a touchscreen - I havent used one yet... Let us know how navigation works with the Q, I am interested! Thanks again! I have the audiovox xv6600 (Verizon) I use sometimes. I'm going to have to upgrade to a Windows Mobile 5 soon. Some sites such as Google have a special pda version of their site. You should look into that in your spare time Paul. No rush, if you can have it running by next Friday that's fine.

Using the standard browser - and yes I login, reply and do PMs. Depends on if I can connect with Broadband or National Access as for how fast it is. So some days it's pretty quick - others not so - but I'm not doing much except waiting around anyways. Would be nice if the 650's were upgradable to the 700/750 OS - but I don't think it's gonna happen. Haven't checked recently but not holding my breath. Ron |

Re: Club Stogie Mobile - Is anyone else doin' it?
Hey Ron, believe it or not, the 700p uses the same OS as the 650 with only minor changes. The Blazer browser is still there and it functions almost the exact same way. The 650 has Palm 5.4, the 700p Palm 5.4.9. I am unaware of any plans to offer WM5 on the 650. But on the other hand, I had found the 650 easier to use than the 700w versions.

Re: Club Stogie Mobile - Is anyone else doin' it?
I tried getting it on my dads Trio before but it takes a little while and its not really worth the hasle. It is cool though that he can get internet, email, etc on it.

Re: Club Stogie Mobile - Is anyone else doin' it?
I just tried this for the first time last night on my Blackberry. It worked surprisingly well. I had no problems logging in, reading forums, responding to PMs, etc. While definitely not ideal, it beats no CS at all

I also use my Treo 650... I have the unlocked version since T-Mobile doesn't support it.

Re: Club Stogie Mobile - Is anyone else doin' it?
I've read the forum using wi-fi and my iPAQ. It was painful to reply without a QWERTY keyboard but I'm fair efficient with the stylus.

Re: Club Stogie Mobile - Is anyone else doin' it?
I've used my iPaq HX4700 (Windows Mobile '03) and a Motorola RAZR connected via Bluetooth over GPRS to get to CS using the Opera Mini browser, because Mobile IE just sucks rocks. Haven't tried to upload any pictures, but everything works. If anyone's interested, I can take a picture later.
