D-Tigers: Youth or Old Age?

We watched our beloved D-Tigers cream the Yankees tonight (NO intentions of demeaning the Yanks in ANY WAY!!!).

But what came up was a discussion of coach-vs-player interaction. Leyland is an old fart with a bunch of young players... Torre is an old fart with a bunch or old players.

It makes me wonder...

Would I rather be an old fart coaching young players, or a young fart taking instructions from an old fart???

Ahh well... I think I need to fart!

Leyland is one hell of a manager. He had proven he can take low budget teams and turn them into winners. He did it in 97 win the Marlins and he has a really good shot at doing it this year. He does a great job with the young kids, getting them to believe in themselves and motivates them. WELL DONE! Im so happy right now, seeing the god damn yankees lose in the first round is very sweet.

I agree. And It doesnt matter the age, Its the Respect. Leyland is one of the most respected men in baseball. I hope this is the start of a dynasty. No more yankees winning all the damn time!

They are 0 for the last 6 years, their time has come and gone what good is it to make the playoffs and lose in the first round?

Re: D-Tigers: Youth or Old Age?

I guess what impresses me MOST about Leyland is that he is the LEAST favorable "cheerleader" as a manager.

How MANY times have we seen "managers" as "PR Guys," standing in the duggout or in front of a microphone "rooting for their team" because the know that their making half the bucks of the lowest-paid player?

Leyland's not like that. He's a stone-cold bastard, and he DEMANDS the best from those he manages. He's got quite enough in the bank to live quite comfortably for life. But "comfort" isn't in his vocabulary.

I admire "uncomfortable" people... THOSE are the people who get the job done!!!

'Nuff said!

It's better than not making the playoffs

They managed to take their division from the hated red sox, at least not all the season was a wash.

Leyland is a good manager. Right fit for the Tigers.

not in my book, the goal is to win the world series if you dont the whole season was a waste. Yankees didnt win it and Red Sox didnt win it, both seasons were a waste.

Not in my book. The Yankees ARE the AL East Champions in 2006. They clinched the division and you can't take that away from em. You know from being a Red Sox fan how hard it is to go all the way and win a WS even with a good team. I'm happy that the Yankees won 97 games this yr. I got to watch em pull a modern day Boston Massacre and they clinched the East. Not a bad season in my book. You on the other hand watched your team flop for 3 months.

Your missing the point, no team plays just to win a division, they play to win the WS and anything short of that is a dissapointment and a wasted season. Maybe you dont know what its like to actually play the game and strive to win it all.

They play to win the World Series of course, but it is a more successful season when you win a division and make the playoffs then when you don't. The Yankees had a more successful season than the Red Sox, as they usually do.
