Re: Someone Stole My Credit Card Numbers !!!

I travel extensively across the globe. This year i've done three around the world trips.

I was in russia and the republics over the past three weeks. I got declined on several occassions when i tried to use my card due to the anti-fraud mechanisms kicking in (seriously, how many is trying to charge $2,000 to hotel Aisu in Kazakhstan)...

Anyway, long story made short, i'm quite pleased with the anti-fraud mechanisms. I've had numerous occasions when bad guys have gotten hold of my card number and billed stuff to it. Now i change out my cards on a 8-12 month schedule just to make it harder for the bad guys.

Last year someone got hold of my visa card # and charged $42,000 against it. Tursn out that someone chartered a jet from london to spain and payed for it with my CC. The CC company let it through because i have made some significant expenses with them on behalf of my company so altough this was at the upper limit, it wasn't outside my spending profile. The FBI got involved in this case and when they interviewed me the agent told me that they think this was the russian mafia. Especially since i've been to moscow earlier it fit the profile. The CC company was a bit of jerks though, they didn't let me off the charge until the FBI guys formally concluded that this was fraudulent (the fact that i wasn't even in the UK at the time didn't seem to mean much to them).

For the really bad third world countries (like somalia, mozambique, parts of south east asia) i use a special CC with a $1,500 credit limit. Figure that if fraud would take place i would have it limited to a smaller amount than what i have on the card i use for most of my corporate expenses. I also use the card with the low limit for some online purchases from companies which i think may be a bit loose on their security.

It's a dangerous world out there. I recommend everyone to check their statements carefully...

Re: Someone Stole My Credit Card Numbers !!!

I have a friend that owns a golf course.

One day they got a call from a guy in Africa that was opening a golf course and needed all of the golf clubs he could get PDQ.

They were able to delay the call while calling the credit card company on another phone, who in turn contacted the owner of the card that was not on the other line. Lucky for the owner this was the first time they tried to use it.

Don't know if they ever caught the person that stole the card.

Re: Someone Stole My Credit Card Numbers !!!

Wow, that's lousy.

Don't credit card companies like Visa, MC and AMEX protect their customers to the tune of $50 maximum liability for fraudulent purchases, or something like that?

Re: Someone Stole My Credit Card Numbers !!!

I have no maximum liability on fradulent purchases. If I didn't make the purchase, I don't pay a dime. I love my CC companies.

Any clue where they may have gotten it from? Any online purchases recently?

Re: Someone Stole My Credit Card Numbers !!!

Someone used my CC # a few years back -- $14.95 to join an online KISS fan club... not my style at all. I figured it was the bank's fault somehow because who would use a card to sign up for a piddly online membership and nothing else.
