Not "like" family. They are. Even if they're just "property" according to the law, they are living creatures with a wide array of emotions. They love you unconditionally, are loyal, and so much fun. They depend on you for food, water, shelter, socialization, and companionship. I like my pets more than I like a lot of people.

Animals "are". They don't have hidden agendas. They're honest. There are no lies or betrayals. And each one of them has a personality.

Sorry for the mini-rant. I call my two cats my "kids" and enjoy every second I spend with them. My other one Buttons had to be put to sleep when he was a mere 8 months old, and that tore me up. But I better not go into all the details, lest I become teary-eyed here at work.

Again, condolences for your loss.
