Re: Digital SLR Advice...
I wouldn't limit your choice to the XTi, just yet. Though a very good camera there are a bunch out there for you to choose.
My suggestion, if you haven't done so, is to head out to your local camera B&M and hold each camera and get a feel for it and look at the controls. This is probably the most important for you before you make the decision. Because honestly, most cameras you look at would be similar in performance. How comfortable you are and how easy it is for you to learn the controls of the camera you choose would be important. Look at a couple of different cameras, these are the one that have below $1000 price: Panasonic Lumix Sony Alpha A-100 Nikon D70s Canon Rebel XTi I love my Canon 1DMKIIN and my Canon 5D when I am working. But I really don't want to lug around a big camera and lenses when I am just around family and friends. So, I usually stick to my trusty old SD450. When you are ready to buy, look here: B&H Photo -Manny |

Re: Digital SLR Advice...
I have the Cannon Rebel XTi, and love it. it's small, but fits comfortably. The button take a bit to get used to.
I chose Cannon bacuase I had an Elan II film body, and have an assortment of lenses. No Need to buy it all again!! ![]() Get a good burner as well, as your hard drive wil fill up fast! Nikon is reputed to be 'the best in the business', hence why you see Nikon in the hands of 'professionals'. I also have a Tamrac gadget bag, their velocity series. All fits in nicely!

I don't think anyone could dispute that the Canon is one of the best SLR cameras on the market today. Whether it or Nikon is better is subject to some dispute. I think going up to the 20d or 30d does make sense in that it only costs a few hundred more but you'll get a professional camera with many other options at that level. Personally, I'd go with the Canon 20 or 30d....myself... Have fun.... |

Re: Digital SLR Advice...
Well, I'm a huge Canon fan, but I suggest either a Canon or Nikon. Most people who own Canon or Nikon DSLR's do so because their old film camera was that brand. The new buyers, I believe Canon has the edge. In my opinion Canon has a little bit better pic quality, but the Nikons are built a little better. But I know many Nikon owners who take way better pics than me. B&H is a good supplier, however I know several people who have bought from Circuit City because they offer a great warranty that includes physical damage if you drop it. My

Re: Digital SLR Advice...
As for what is in the hands of the pros I would say it is about 50 50 when it comes to small format cameras between cannon and nikon for the main system. It is just personal prefrence. I chose nikon because of the feel. The picture making comes with the feel of the camera and your ability to control it. Ultimatley your camera does not matter it just acts as a medium though which you take actions. I get equally cool images that I have sold with my Olympus C750, Nikon N80, Nikon N65, Nikon D70s, and my Yascha TLR.

Re: Digital SLR Advice...
One of the big things to consider is what you will be shooting.
In the Nikon vs Canon debate, it depends quite a big on the type of photography you will be doing and the lenses it will require. You may find one system has more of what you need than the other. Hope this helps! |

Re: Digital SLR Advice...
With all the suspect online retailers out there, the only two I have ever used are B&H Photo and Adorama in New York. Competitive prices and legit retailers you wouldn't lose sleep over. I'm sure there are many others though.

Re: Digital SLR Advice...
The good thing about B&H and Adorama is not only are they authorized dealers for the warranty but you can also compare their grey market offerings if needed.

Re: Digital SLR Advice...
The xTi will be MORE than enough for 99% of the population. Here's a little word of advice though, it's all about the glass. Get a $10,000 camera and crappy lenses, you are going to have average quality pictures. Get a $500 camera and some great lenses, your pics will be great quality. Within reason, save money on the body and use that towards the glass.

Re: Digital SLR Advice...
All my gears I bought at B&H and Adorama. And I have spent tens of thousands of dollars on camera gear.
-Manny I agree with Greerzilla. Get the XTi and spend the money saved on better or more glass. The camera is just the box to store your images, without better glass, your pictures will still be mediocre. Having said that, however, I have seen great photos taken by friends of mine with a $65 50mm lens. But that lens is probably more of an exception than the norm. But, as a general rule always upgrade the glass first. Last edited by msad1217; 11-10-2006 at 12:22 AM.. |
