So I go the stupid letter from the IRS saying my taxes were f'd up from last year. The real messed up thing is that I know nothing about taxes, that's why I payed HR Block an ass load of cash to do them for me. I am so pissed. I'm pretty sure they have some kind of guarantee, but still. ggggggggggrrrrrrrr

Don't use H&R block. I have a private accountant with his own company which amongst other things includes his time to fight for me in court should there ever be any concerns about my tax filings. Worth every cent imho, and just slightly more than the big corporations.

I had this happen in 1989, they only guarantee the calculation. Honestly cannot remember if it was HnR or who but, If the information is not correct or your neglect to provide some information ie 1099 etc. then you are SOL. Sorry did not mean to rain on the parade or anything. On a better note my out of pocket was like 800. and change so it was not a big deal. The shitz is in the fine print of that guarantee.!

Good luck. The IRS seems to almost operate outside of the law and can be quite nasty in their collection techniques.
I use a private CPA that specializes in Entertainment taxes (my industry). If I ever get called up he's right there with me. Well worth the extra $$ is costs every year, and besides the guy does Chuck Yeager's taxes. How could I not hire him? He is friends with a real American Hero!

Many can guess my stance on an income tax system, let alone our current one, so I just hand everything off and spare myself the triple heart attack and quadruple stroke that would occur if I were actively involved.

H&R Blech. Depends on the office, but many of them are staffed by idiots and incompentents. And they don't let their preparers actually WORK with a client. Bring your stuff, drop it off and GET OUT! Then pay through the nose when you pick it up.

When I was actively preparing taxes as a self-employed independent preparer and member of the National Association of Tax Professionals, I got about 30% or so of my clients from Blech. Usually had to amend the last three years to straighten them out for the client and get them the rest of their refunds.

So, on that basis, I liked Blech. They brought me many clients.

They give you a list of tax attorneys to go to if you need help, but they don't go with you to an audit. You are on your own, pal.

I truly hope things work out for you, but usually things aren't as bad as you think they will be. Except when they're worse. Ooops! Maybe I shouldn't have said that!

Taxes are top priority for my business and myself. You need to be sure you have a good CPA that will stand behind you when the shit hits the fan. Sometimes, its worth paying the extra dough for this. Thats why my accountant is a CPA and a Tax Atty.

I feel for yah. Never been through it. But clients and friends have and its not fun. Just no other way to say it. Good luck, have good representation at the audit and you will be fine.

I feel your pain bro, I got that letter a few months ago and they said I owed $1200 from 2 years ago. Talk about an unexpected hit! I feel the same as you, why am I paying my tax guy when I could try to file them myself and botch it up anyway?

I did receive on letter one year going back about 10 years or so as I never recieved an interest statement on a CD and they were looking for the money I owed. The amount was minimal but when you added interest and penalty, I recall it seemed the darn thing doubled.

I go very, very conservative on my taxes every year. My only write off is donations, children deduction and like last year, my hurricane losses that were legally allowed (my $5,000 deductible for damages). The rest is simple. How much I earned, how much I paid, how much I either get back or owe. I rather get screwed that way. The way I figure it, will never be audited that way and what I am being screwed out of now, will probably seem like nothing compared to the cost if audited.
