My best car was my 1972 Corvette. It had a 454 with an 8-71 Blower. It was white pearl coat with a white leather custom interior. I had an Alpine sound system in it and it boomed when I needed it to. But the bestpart of the Car was the sub 12 second quarter mile times. It really Rocked. Unfortunately I had to sell it to buy my house.

Re: What's the best car you've owned.

1956 Ford Sunliner Convertible. Had the big V8 engine (can't remember the size). Very fast! Bought it when I was a senior in high school. Drop the top, go cruising and the girls just jumped in. The glove compartment was neat. Put your hand under and behind it and you could place a pint bottle on top of it. Rested securely and out of sight. Also had the passenger seat set up with an easy in and out pin. Pull the pin and the back of the seat went down flush with the back seat. Lots of fun at the "drive-ins" and other places. Daytime or night time, a fun car! Mine was Orange on the bottom and White on the top.
Going home in the early AM one night on a highway some one got on my tail, so I upped the speed to about 80mph. They stayed right with me. So I thought, okay big boy lets see what you have! I floored it and at about 105mph they started losing ground and at 115mph they were history. Showed them! About one week later my Dad gets a letter in the mail from the Ma. Registry Department stating they were following my car and it speed of and they started to chase me but cut the pusuit off at over a hundred miles per hour. Evidently an unmarked car with no lights or siren. Their letter mentioned the time, date and location. Dad took my license and mailed it to them and I walked for the next 60 days!! Sumb*tch!

Re: What's the best car you've owned.

My first "new" car as well is my favorite, likely for sentimental reasons. 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT with all the fixins. Deep red and silver, loved it! Sold it way to soon.

On another note, amongst the many cars I have had, I just finally parted with my 1988 Jeep Comache Eliminator. 167k in miles, and still my baby. Man that 4.0L striaght six could go. Donated it to charity, as I couldn't think of selling it.

Re: What's the best car you've owned.

Very cool stories. I particularly liked Sean's story about the Datsun.

It is amazing how fondly we remember some of the cars we have owned. I have driven my share of beaters in my younger days, as I was a doper & boozer some years ago & squandered countless dollars in this fashion. I now invest my money "wisely" in cigars! Anyway, I remember cars that you had to sweet talk, or they wouldn't start. I also remember cars that would only respond to the foulest language my imagination could muster.

I had a '64 Chevy Impala that I knocked a hole in the oil pan while driving gravel roads in the Missouri Ozarks. I patched it with marine epoxy & sold the car a year or so later.....it was running fine.

I could go on & on with car stories, but who knows, maybe someday I'll want to run for Mayor or something.......aw who am I kidding! With my past, I couldn't run for dogcatcher & win.

Re: What's the best car you've owned.

My first car(truck)... 1980 Toyota 4 wheel drive:

-Rebuilt 22-RE from Japan
-Weber carb
-Headers
-Low flow exhaust
-Manual locking hubs
-Solid front/rear axles
-Locking rear differential
-Roll bar
-Tube bumpers
-Solid grill guard
-Good departure angles

I never worried about going anywhere with that truck. When I got stuck in deep mud, all I had to do was climb out of the window onto the hood, step down onto the tires, lock the hubs, and I was peeling my way out of any sticky situation. Of course I was never stupid enough to go plowing through mud or creek crossings where I wasn't sure about the depth

I was wanting to drop in a Buick 231 or Chevy small block, but I sold it.

Re: What's the best car you've owned.

Man I am one boring guy when it comes to cars. I've owned at least 40 cars, currently have 3 and not a single one stands out. A few of the crazy pranks and accidents, but nothing as good as you guys and your cars.

Odd thing is I make a living repairing and maintaining large diesel engines and power plants, been doing it for years, 5000 HP and up. Then I hop in my 3 cylinder metro commute car to drive home.

I guess it's like working at the candy factory.

My favorite ride of all time is when I was 15 years old in Bakersfield CA, a 1971 Yamaha Enduro, with the expansion chamber....way cool wheelie popper and hill climber.

75 Buick Apollo
I was voted class clown for a reason. Paid $200 when I was 16 and it was the most fun car I ever owned. It had personality.

Re: What's the best car you've owned.

Have owned a bunch of cars over the years, 3 really bring back fond memories,1) 69 VW camper, bought from retired FAA electrician who had maintained it meticulously.Paid 750 bucks for it, drove it for almost 4 years, and sold it for what I paid for it,2) 66 fire engine red, white ragtop, big block 427, 390 factory hp, Sting Ray. Bought in 76, still sick about selling,3) 1984 7331 BMW, bought in 1997 with 80,000 right miles for 4 grand, all the bells and whistles worked. The best highway auto I ever sat my ass in...even 13 years old. Honorable mention goes to my 94 Probe GT, bought new. Good looking, plenty fast, and mine was anvil reliable. Frank B

Whoa Okie! That's some set of wheels.

My favorite wheels were my last Beemer -- a '92 325is that I sold in May with 346,000 miles on it, everyone of them put there by me (no kidding). Many a good time & road adventure in it.
