What's the best car you've owned.

My best car was my 1st. It was a 1962 Plymouth Belvedere. It had a 318 two barrel engine, a push button transmission & was a powder blue 2/door hardtop. That was a great car. I put an 8 track tape deck in it & it was a cruise machine. It handled well & had plenty of power for a 17 year old. I drove it for a little over a year & sold it for what we paid for it......$150.00.

Wish I had it back sometimes. I went out today & bought an 04 white Chrysler Sebring & was wondering to myself if it would even come close to being as good as my old Belvedere.

I have a 95 Z28 and it is great. One of the fastest cars for the money, and looks awesome too. I havn't really had any problems with it either, Camaro are usually know for being maintainence nightmares. Maybe I'm just good to my baby.

Stupid ass Chevy quit making them though...

Re: What's the best car you've owned.

My next car, since I'm getting into the family thing, is going to be a Dodge Magnum. Station wagon that looks like a hotrod, has a 5.7L supercharged V8 with 350 HP, its faster than my Camaro Z28 and comes in an all-wheel-drive version for the snow (and rally racing!). Too bad they are not going to release a manual version, I'd go out and buy one now.

Re: What's the best car you've owned.

My first car, a 1981 Chevy Citation 4 speed manual transmission in a shite brown color. If ever there was a babe magnet, that was definitely not it. Could only go up from there. I am currently trying to find a nice barely used VW Passat but not having much luck yet. I must have another manual, automatic transmission cars are just boring to drive.

1998 Mustang GT

Black with Black Leather and 20% tint. I was 21, finishing college and bartending at night. Man those were the days!

Just like summerkc I am getting into the family thing so I have a 04 Honda Accord. 240 HP handles well and seats 4 comfortably, not a bad car.

My wife has a BMW 325xi - I take that out when I really want to have some fun

My 1973 Plymouth Satellite with a 318 is up there, primarily because it was cheap, fast and I could sleep in either of the seats without being cramped: why yes, I do have a touch of homeless bum in me.

But my favorite car was a Datsun 1200 from the early '70s, before they made the B210. I could start the car with a dime, the ignition lock didn't work and I could push start it myself, even on flat roads.

One winter my parents decided I sould drive the Volvo and leave the Datsun parked. After 3 months of winter, up in Canada where I grew up, my brother and I decided to shovel the snow off the Datsun, it was buried at that time under 2-3 feet and snow was up to the roof on the sides. After it was cleared off, I decided to see if it would start. Now, keep in mind we had block heaters in the Volvo and the Chevy and even though they would be plugged in all night, they were a bitch to start in the morning. The Datsun hadn't been touched in months but when I pumped the gas 4 times and turned the ignition, it started right up. The other cars in the driveway stared at the ground in shame.

I drove that car over mountains, on roads sane people only travel with 4x4s. One day 2 hours up some godforsaken road, the motor began making pounding noises, and I mean POUNDING. I look at the dash and the temp light was lit. Oops. I opened the hood and smelled the sweet smell of coolant, of which I had none in the rad. A 20 minute hike mercifully brought me to a stream where I filled up some bottles I had in the trunk with water. Rad was cool when I got back and I filled it up. Turn the key, "rin rin rin.....no problem mon".

Another time I had 7 people in the car. Running around a local cape, I forgot where deadman's curve was and hit it going 65 or so. A safe speed is 30. I realized we were screwed and just cranked the wheel as far as I could to the right. The car skidded and scuffed its way over and nearly hit the guard rail. We made it, I attribute to the extra weight of having 7 people in the car. Had we hit the rail and went over, there was a sheer 300 foot drop to the rocks by the Atlantic ocean. The people in the back didn't see anything, the girl on my friend's lap in the front was justifiably terrified, and to this day introduces me as the guy that nearly killed her, twice. The other time....well, thats another story.

When the car was rusted out, shocks just about pushing through, my parents decided to sell it. I wanted to drive it up one of the mountain roads as far as it would go and leave it there, a monument of a car that wouldn't die. My parents said no, so they sold it to some guy for 50 bucks. When he came he brought a tow rope. My brother and I looked at him funny and asked him why he didn't just drive it. OK, the brake pads were pretty much to the metal but they worked. He looked at us in shock, "this car drives"?? My brother smiled at him, "I had it going 80 yesterday, of course it drives". The guy hopped in and off it went......where it is I don't know, but I miss that car.

Re: What's the best car you've owned.

In high school I had a 55 Chevy DelRay with a 350, 12 bolt posi and a Muncie Rockcrusher transmission. I miss that car.

After high school, I always had my eye on the Porsche 911SC. The SC was always my favorite Porsche, just enough technology to make it reliable and not enough technology to make it boring. I liked the lines of the car and even though the 911 changed over the years I always wanted an SC.

Five years ago, I saw a 1980SC coupe in the Auto Trader at a price that was kind of low for the car and called the guy. The car had always been garaged and showed no sign of exposure damage, sun rot etc. It did however need a tune up, valve adjusment, shocks, wheel bearings, brakes, paint polishing, wheel polishing, interior cleaning, interior and exterior lights replaced, shifter rebuilt etc etc. It now looks good and runs good, it's a lot of fun to drive. This is my favorite car.
