Cigar lighter

Ive been reading on the internet that i should not lit my cigars with a Zippo like lighter. Is this really bad or just little different for cigars than butane lighters? i heard that zippos where good for this application but on the internet i have seeing the contrary. So i dont know now.

Re: Cigar lighter

The fumes from the lighter fluid tend to taint the flavor of the cigar. This is a temporary situation & could most certainly be corrected by purging, but butane burns much cleaner & doesn't leave that kerosene taste in your mouth.
Hope this helps.

Re: Cigar lighter

Kansashat is right. you can really taste it with pipes but it does make a cigar taste butaney (new word?). save butane for campfires and cigarettes.

There are a lot of torch lighters to choose from.

I have been using a Solo Trek for about 2 years. I like the dual flame style torch lighters. They are reasonably priced and can be found at Bargain Humidors.

Re: Cigar lighter

Purists use a match to light a cedar strip. They gently let the burning wood "warm" the foot of the stick. The aficionado will then draw slowly on the cigar, never letting the flame touch tobacco.

I tried that technique, once.

After burning a hole in the front of my shirt with a cedar ash, I started using an Eddie Bauer butane lighter. Cheap, rugged, and the compass tells me which way is North.

Matches that come with cigar purchases are too small to get the job done with one match.

Re: Cigar lighter

Personally, i use a colibri tri-cutta, three sizes of punch and a wind resistant torch, or on other ocassions i use a nibo VIP, both are clean burning butane, just depends on whether i want a torch or regular flame..

Re: Cigar lighter

One thing to remember is to buy triple refined butane when it comes time to refill your lighter. The other stuff is full of impurities & will gunk up your lighter. I ruined a few before reading this bit of information somewhere. They say Lava butane is the best, but it can be hard to find. Just look for "triple refined" on the can & you should be ok. Don't buy Ronson.

Re: Cigar lighter

I light myself on fire and that seems to work good...for me,, but it does leave a little bit of a gas smell on the cigar....

Re: Cigar lighter

With a butane you also get a controlled burn area, zippo bic and such tend to light one side more that the other then your lopsided....either that or I was way to drunk to have a cigar?

Re: Cigar lighter

I use a Colibri Metro which I find to be very effective in lighting my cigars. I started with regular box matches but I ended up going through an entire box for 1 cigar. Needless to say I shelled out the cash and got myself a decent lighter.

Has anybody ever paid attention to burning cedar when used to light a cigar?
I find that burning cedar puts out a lot of dark smoke which maybe from wood resins being burned. Just think, when you're lighting a cigar you're actually drawing that burning resin into the cigar, and later you'll be drawing it into your mouth. The idea is just disgusting. Far from adding any "natural flavor" to the cigar, I think it would detract from the natural flavors of the tobacco.

Now I don't want to sound negative to anyone who likes torching a cigar w/ cedar, but once you pay close attention to the amount of burning resing coming from cedar, I just don't see how you'd want to do that.

As for matches, I find that stick matches work well, but because of the short burn time of most short matches, I often use 3 or 4 at a time. The flame's bigger and "hotter" and a cigar lights much faster when using a few at a time.

But my favorite lighter overall is a Colibri Trifecta. Great torch. For back up, I like to use a Solo Trek -- another great lighter. I often attend herfs wearing a fanny pack in which I'll also carry additional back up lighters including a Nibo triple torch, and my favorite of all pocket lighters (no longer made) a Blazer Ambassador. Now in my fanny pack I'll also carry a couple of cutters -- I like using Palio and Savinelli ones.

Ungh!! Boy did I just go on rambling!! Sorry about that. Hope some of what I said turns out useful.

I bought a Vector lighter that was about $20. Since I smoke mainly outside the matches just weren't cutting it.

Re: Cigar lighter

I was a big match fan for a while. It may be a skill to be able to light a cigar with one match, but once you learn it, it works fine. Stopped using them recently and am looking to get my first torch. We just did a group buy for a bunch of zippos with engraved logo and I know several smokers who use a zippo. You can let it burn for five or ten seconds and the smell goes away. Or you can get a torch insert. I got the torch and am looking forward to trying it this week.
Tried cedar last week coincidentally and found no smoke, but maybe my cedar stick just had little resin? It sure smelled nice.
