Comic book collecting

My son wants to start collecting comic books. Does anyone know of any good current comic books that are popular right now that he might be interested in? He's 10, so he probably won't be interested in TMNT or MMPW. Thanks!

Depending on how much you want to spend, he may be able to find something he likes here:

Re: Comic book collecting

I'd say take him to the comic store and let him pick out 2 or 3, see where it goes from there.

Re: Comic book collecting

All X-men titles used to be good. I quit collecting when I was a teenager, but now I enjoy reading them from time to time. The older comics offer more of a storyline. The newer comics are more graphically enhance rather than focusing on developing the characters.

Go with the classics! Batman, Superman, Spiderman, X-Men, Hulk, etc. Can't go wrong there, imo.

Re: Comic book collecting

Like most "collectibles", there's a wide array of stuff available. The classics are what I enjoyed, and still have several hundred stored away. The newer 'graphic novels' are flashy and appeal to some, but not much in the way of a story line.

Like someone mentioned, head out to a comic book store and find a couple titles he likes. Once he's settled into something he enjoys, you can look at some older stuff, or narrow it down to 2-3 titles.

After all, what's the point of collecting something if you don't enjoy it in the first place?

Well.... different folks for different strokes.... my two favourite comics were Usagi Yojimbo and Groo... but I don't know if those two are still going.

Most of the Marvel Superhero books are popular over here in the UK... I don't know about the US. The reason I say just go to the store is that just because it's popular doesn't mean he'll like it. What kind of cartoons does he like? do they do a comic version?

Re: Comic book collecting

Maybe ask Brent for some pointers.
I am assuming that he is a comicbookfreak because of his user name.

I don't know too much about comics , but taking him to a shop to look is always a good idea. Of course that could overwelm him and he may want everything too.

For a 10 yo, be sure you check if it's a mature content reader only comic. Examples like Preacher, Hellraiser, Swamp Thing, Sin City, contain more mature themes.

The X-comics are always good starters, along with Batman, Spider-man, Superman, The Hulk, JLA, Star Wars Comics etc

Just remember there are alot more Adult themed comics out there now, so remember to take a look at the books you are getting him.

Ok now I am going to break a few CS rules and give out a couple of sources for cheaper comics and special editions.

http://www.westfieldcomics.com/

One of the best distributers out there great prices and service. Although I quit collecting in '98, I bought from the folks for years. Great shipping and customer service.

http://www.dynamicforces.com/htmlfil...ess041206.html

A great place to find, Alternate cover and limited edition comics. Also autographed, Lithographs, trading cards, fine comic art, and many other "specials"as well as regulars.

http://www.milehighcomics.com/

They sell about everything. Old and new. Check them out they have a vast amount of books to choose from.

Those should get you started.

You can sit down with your son and have him look at the sites with you and maybe get an idea of what he likes or may be interested in.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or want to discuss Comics, and I will try to help you all I can. If you find out what you think he may like, let me know, I could send him a little package to get him started.

Hope this helps.

Mile High is still around, they have been in business for more years then I care to remember, back in the 70's when the Comic Book Boom first started they were one of the premier vendors in the country. I used to run a store in Charlottesville, Va back then called All Winners Comics. Met them at a few shows.

He'll be back. It's a ploy; they'll bring him back within a year in a CAPTAIN AMERICA LIVES! special, then launch a the NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA line.
