Best mulching push mower under $600?

I am in the market for a mower. I just purchased a home and don't have one. I am VERY partial to Honda engines. I know they make a great mower, but what about MULCHING mowers? I did some research, but only came up with little info. So far it looks like the Toro is the best.

I am not looking for the cheapest, I don't WANT to go over 600 but will if necessary. I believe in buying top quality products/tools and having them for nearly my whole life.

I have a Toro SuperRecycler for 3 years now and I really like it. Basically for me it can down to the fact that you could get the most for your money with a the Toro. I mulch and it does a great job - also good for mulching leaves in the fall. Don't remember what I paid but it was less than $500 probably around 400.

Personally I am not a fan of mulching mowers. I'm no expert but I do have 30+ years of taking care of my lawns - and I normally have the greenest lawn on the street -

I much prefer to bag rather than have clippings clogging up the lawn. In addition to your mower - get a good spreader. Fertilizer is key to a great lawn.

Re: Best mulching push mower under $600?

Put me down as another Toro fan. Not the cheapest out there, but it lasts forever and I have never, ever had to pull the starter cord more than twice, and I've only had to pull it twice maybe three times. The variable speed works without you thinking about it, does a great job mulching or bagging. The weak points as I see them: I wish the bag were a little bit larger, and the frame for the handle is lighter weight than I would like to see it.

Caveat: I really haven't used mine more than a handful of times over the past couple of years as my yard guy takes care of the grass these days, but he uses a commercial Toro as his push mower for touch up and close work. The thing is, the other day I pushed the priming bulb a couple of times, pulled the cord and it still cranked on the first shot after sitting in the garage for six months.

Don't like them either...You have to mow more often and if the grass is damp its clump city.. I have two lawn boys,,one for the wife and the other is a spare for the wife..

Re: Best mulching push mower under $600?

By far the best lawn mower on the market, IMO, is the Lawnboy line. Honda engines and a lifetime warranty cant be beat. I've owned a Lawnboy for 20 years and have not had one problem. Not cheap but can be had for under $600.

I've also owned nothing but mulching mowers, as well. The clippings are actually good for the yard and serve as fertilizer for the grass. The lawnboys can also be used for bagging, should you choose.
